Woman dead after car crashes into lunchtime diners in Melbourne

A woman is dead after a car crashed into lunchtime diners at a shopping centre in Wantirna South in Melbourne's east.The woman was sitting outside a restaurant at Westfield Knox about 12.45pm when the car crashed into the building.Police said the woman died at the scene.She is yet to be formally identified.The driver and passenger of the vehicle were both taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said they were in a stable condition.A second customer of the cafe was checked by paramedics at the scene."Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will attend to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash," a Victoria Police spokesperson said."Police do not believe the incident was an intentional act."In a social media post, the restaurant, Martini and Co, said it was closed until further notice."We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding," it said."Please stay safe."A crime scene has been set up and police are appealing for any shoppers or customers from the cafe who who witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
