Woman crushed to death by suicidal jumper from 11th floor in Japan - but he survives: Father demands murder charge

Published: 07:26 EDT, 13 October 2026 | Updated: 07:28 EDT, 13 October 2026 A father has called for a man to face a murder charge in Japan after he allegedly crushed his daughter to death while attempting to take his own life.Tomoki Inaba, 23, was walking home with a friend in Nagoya's Sakae district at around 1am on July 19 when Shinsei Taguchi jumped from the 11th floor of the apartment building. Ms Inaba was crushed by the 29-year-old and, despite the best medical efforts, was pronounced dead in hospital hours later after suffering a hemorrhagic shock. But Mr Taguchi survived, according to local news outlet Tokyo Reporter. After being discharged from hospital in August, he was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence resulting in death. Mr Taguchi is currently being assessed by psychiatrists to establish whether he can be held criminally responsible for his actions, according to TBS News. The victim's father Kenji Inaba, however, has now demanded that Mr Taguchi is charged with the murder of his daughter. Seeking answers, Mr Inaba claimed he has visited the suspect three times in detention, where he claims Mr Taguchi admitted he knew his jump could have cost someone their life. Tomoki Inaba was killed in Nagoya, Japan (pictured) in July after Shinsei Taguchi jumped from the 11th floor of the apartment building'He told me, "I'm sorry for what happened to your precious daughter," but honestly, anyone could say that,' Mr Inaba told local news outlet TV Asahi. 'I asked him, "You jumped thinking you didn't care if there were people below, or if they lived or died, right?" And he replied, "Yes, that's right." He jumped without caring if he took someone with him. I absolutely cannot accept this being brushed off as an accident.' Mr Inaba is now pushing prosecutors to upgrade the charge to murder based on 'willful negligence'. He argues Mr Taguchi knew the risks of jumping from the balcony onto the street of the busy Sakae district - and therefore the risk of taking a life. The family has urged investigators to scrutinise Mr Taguchi's claim that he has no memory of the incident. The grieving father has since collected more than 45,000 signatures for a petition launched last month, which argues for the harsher penalty. 'Even if the suspect jumped with the intention of taking his own life, he should have understood that jumping from a high-rise building in a busy entertainment district could result in him striking and killing someone below,' the petition states. 'Such conduct, which puts innocent third parties at risk, must not be allowed to go unchallenged. 'We earnestly hope that the justice system will confront the gravity of a human life and ensure that our daughter’s death is not dismissed as merely an ‘unfortunate accident.'
