Woman accuses UP sub-inspector of rape, says he married, then abandoned her

A Kanpur woman has accused a Uttar Pradesh Police sub-inspector of raping her on a false promise of marriage and later abandoning her after marrying her. She has now approached senior police officers, seeking registration of an FIR and action against the officer.According to the woman's complaint, she became acquainted with sub-inspector Satyendra Gautam, currently posted in Kanpur's Sen Paschim Para area, through Instagram in 2024 while she was pursuing her BTech degree. Their friendship gradually developed into a relationship, after which the police officer allegedly proposed marriage.The woman alleged that the sub-inspector later called her to his room, where he allegedly raped her on the assurance that he would marry her. She claimed that despite repeated sexual assaults, he later refused to fulfil his promise of marriage, prompting her to approach the Kanpur Police Commissioner's office in 2024 with a complaint seeking registration of a rape case.According to the complainant, the officer subsequently married her at a temple after learning about the complaint. She said the marriage was later legally registered. However, she alleged that the relationship deteriorated soon afterwards and that the officer physically assaulted her before forcing her out of the house. The woman further claimed that the sub-inspector told her he had married her only to avoid a rape case and had no intention of living with her. She alleged that he has now filed a divorce petition and left her without financial support or accommodation.She also accused the police of failing to act despite submitting multiple complaints to senior officers. According to her, she was referred by the Police Commissioner's office to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), but no action has been taken on her application so far. Responding to the allegations, DCP (South) D N Chaudhary said the woman and the sub-inspector are legally married and are currently involved in a matrimonial dispute."The woman and our staff member got married. There is now a dispute between them. We have called both parties several times for counselling, but they have not reached a settlement. An Assistant Commissioner of Police has been directed to inquire into the matter. If the woman wants to lodge a criminal complaint against her husband, action will be taken on her application in accordance with the law," Chaudhary said.Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry and the woman's complaint.
