Wolverine's New Non-Mutant Team Revealed, All Members and Powers

Though Wolverine will always be best known as a member of the X-Men, it’s far from the only team he’s been part of in Marvel Comics stories. From his tenures on Team X and Alpha Flight before meeting Charles Xavier, to serving on various iterations of the Avengers and X-Force in more recent years, Logan can work nicely with mutants and non-mutants alike when the situation calls for it. In 2026, a new group has been added to the latter category. Introduced in Wolverine #20 by Saladin Ahmed and Martin Coccolo, the Savage Champions have been thrust back into action in the pages of the adamantium-clawed mutant’s latest solo series. Logan’s new allies hail from other corners of Marvel Comics’ multiverse, and while their powers and abilities don’t come from mutant genetics like his do, they’re just as ferocious as him and also associated with the powerful metal adamantium. Right away, that makes them stand out from the numerous Wolverine clones and mutant multiversal variants that have graced Marvel’s pages, as these characters aren’t merely Logan’s genetic counterparts who went down different life paths. Instead, they’re connected to Earth-616’s Logan through their similar personalities and a shared mantle. The Savage Champions fully reassembled in Wolverine #27, and this non-mutant team has already left quite the impression in such a short amount of time. Wolverine In Wolverine #19, Logan learned that he’s the Savage Champion of Earth-616. The goddess Athena explained that in every universe, an individual is chosen to hold that mantle who embodies man, beast, and metal. It’s the duty of the Savage Champions to oppose the Adamantine, the ancient “primordial spirit” of the metallic ore from which adamantium is also derived. Prior to meeting Athena, Logan discovered Adamantine’s true nature while fighting Romulus in Wolverine #7, which included it seeing adamantium as a “false metal.” Fortunately for Wolverine, adamantium, which has coated his skeleton and claws since his Weapon X days, can harm Adamantine. In addition to the claws that protrude from his forearms, Wolverine’s other mutant powers include a healing factor, which allowed him to survive the adamantium bonding process and has kept him alive for nearly 200 years, and enhanced sight, smell, and hearing. Red Hare Marvel Comics Red Hare is one of the three Savage Champions who debuted in Wolverine #20, as they came to Logan’s rescue when he was near death. Red Hare is an armored samurai warrior who uses adamantium claws as external weapons rather than a part of his body. Wolverine was mysteriously transported to Red Hare’s world in Wolverine #26, though the latter denied being responsible for this, as he’d merely prayed for assistance in battling an Adamantine-powered foe. Regardless, these two successfully killed the Adamantine’s host body, leading to it literally cutting its way into another universe. Boneclaw Marvel Comics Boneclaw, the second member of Wolverine’s new spinoff multiverse is a hulking, furry caveman who lives in some kind of frozen wasteland packed with sabertooth tigers, mammoths, and other prehistoric creatures. Boneclaw wields an adamantium-covered club against his enemies, and also has bone spikes coming out of his forearms. The Adamantine fled to his world after its battle with Wolverine and Red Hare, with the action picking back up there in Wolverine #27. The Wolf with a Gun Marvel Comics The final member of the Savage Champions introduced so far is a Spanish-speaking, gun-slinging cowboy who fires adamantium bullets from his pistols. Although the Wolf with a Gun’s world hasn’t been visited yet, he was the first Savage Champion to demonstrate that adamantium is capable of hurting the Adamantine. Wolf arrived to help Logan, Red Hare, and Boneclaw in Wolverine #27, and once again, it wasn’t explained how he knew to show up. The Villain: Adamantine Marvel Comics Adamantine as a metal has been part of Marvel Comics lore for decades, with it being used to construct Hercules’ golden mace and the Helm of Hades, among other things. However, now that it’s been revealed that this malevolent sentence has been around longer than the gods, Adamantine has taken on new importance in Wolverine’s life, though the longtime X-Man isn’t pleased about this. He told Athena that he’s “never been big on destiny,” and prefers “carving” his own life path. As previously mentioned, Adamantine can possess living beings and imbue them with its power, resulting in them taking on a golden appearance. This has already happened to Lady Deathstrike, Cyber, Romulus, and even Hercules, and the Savage Champions clashed with an Adamantine-powered mammoth in Wolverine #27. The sentience can also take on a humanoid form on its own and still be a formidable threat, like when it attacked a Chinese military base on Earth-616. Although adamantium is one of the strongest metals in the Marvel mythology, it’s not completely indestructible. Adamantine demonstrated this when it shattered the adamantium claws on Logan’s right hand in Wolverine #19. Those claws have since regrown in their base bone form, but now it’s even harder for Logan to battle this entity since only the adamantium claws remaining on his left hand will inflict any damage. It hasn’t been clarified if there’s just one Adamantine that exists across the entire multiverse, or if each universe has its own version of it. Regardless, it’s determined to destroy all adamantium, as it sees the alloy as a cheap copy of itself. That said, Adamantine did once think that Wolverine would be worthy of being its own champion, calling him “he whom we once hoped could grow great.” That no longer appears to be the case, though, with its interest in Logan having diminished since it broke his right set of claws. The Savage Champions Are Destined To Defeat Adamantine Wolverine #27, Written by Saladin Ahmed, Art By Julius Ohta Marvel Comics Although there are many Marvel characters who either have adamantium in their bodies like Wolverine, or wield adamantium weaponry, apparently only the Savage Warriors are capable of posing a true threat to Adamantine. Red Hare, Boneclaw, and Wolf with a Gun have known about their destinies for a long time, and while Logan is only just learning his role in this reality-spanning conflict, they already consider him their “‘brother.” This collection of Wolverine-like characters is reminiscent of the many web-slinging heroes that comprise the Spider-Verse. Whether or not more Savage Champions will be introduced, this quartet has already proved itself to be an effective fighting force. Strangely, Red Hare, Boneclaw, and Wolf with a Gun are already looking to Logan as a leader, despite the fact that he’s only just learned about the Champions and their connection to Adamantine. Granted, that's a wise choice from a tactical perspective, as his suggestion to go for the aforementioned superpowered mammoth’s eyes, just like previously did with Romulus, brought the beast down. Since Wolverine #30 will show Logan’s "feral" side fully emerging as part of a new storyline, it’s unclear if the threat of Adamantine will be fully resolved in the coming weeks, or if it will reemerge at a later date either in this book or elsewhere. Either way, now that the Savage Champions have been established, Wolverine has a new team he can turn to in times of need. Even if the spirit of Adamantine is permanently vanquished, it presumably wouldn’t be difficult to bring Logan’s new comrades back together to combat other threats.
