Wolverine's New Claws Are The Best In His 52-Year History

Marvel brings back the best twist on Wolverine's claws as the X-Men hero fights alongside the Avengers. Wolverine's claws are some of the most legendary weapons in the Marvel Universe, famous for being both destructive and indestructible. Naturally built into his forearms, the three parallel blades are completely retractable, but they also slice through his flesh and skin every time he unsheathes them. If it weren't for his healing factor, Wolverine would put his health in grave danger every time he needed to use his claws, to the point he would rely on his fists most of the time. Long before his skeleton was surgically covered with adamantium, Wolverine relied on his natural bone claws, which are naturally jagged and porous extensions of his skeletal structure that could grow back if broken. Beyond adamantium, when his standard metal blades were supercharged during the Return of Wolverine storyline, Logan also manifested hot claws, which glowed with intense fire capable of melting steel upon impact. More recently, Hercules gifted a variant of Logan a set of claws forged from Adamantine, while other futuristic timelines equipped him with cybernetic energy claws. In other eras and realities where Wolverine lacks his natural-born claws, he has used external glove-mounted claws to maintain his offensive edge. A rarer type of claws that was introduced twenty-four years ago is finally making its comeback this year: scorching laser claws ripped straight out of Star Wars. Wolverine Reveals His Mech Suit's Laser Claws Queen In Black #4; Written By Al Ewing; Art By Iban Coello, Paco Medina, And Guru-eFX During the Earth's Mightiest Heroes' war against Hela's symbiote forces in Queen in Black, Wolverine quickly becomes an expert on Mentellenorites, as he ignores the dramatic transformations their reality-warping abilities force him to go through and defeats them one by one with the help of Storm. These transformations include an eldritch monster Wolverine, a Smurf-like creature, an X-Baby, and a mech suit-wielding variant of himself, originally introduced in the pages of Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar. In Queen in Black #4, this Mecha Wolverine reveals that he wields claws made of lightsaber-like lasers that seem to extend indefinitely. Queen in Black #4's armored Wolverine has roughly the same design as the Mecha Wolverine introduced in Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar, who's now an official member of the Jeff Coast Avengers in that continuity. However, the consciousness driving this variant is Earth-616's Wolverine, who merely adopts the appearance and powers of his multiversal counterparts when he finds himself in the immediate surroundings of the Symbiote Mentellenorites. Thankfully for him, his mech suit variant's claws work similarly enough to his regular weapons, only with a boost of power and reach. Wolverine's Claws Return 24 Years Later... In An Unexpected Universe The Marvel Mangaverse Made Wolverine's Laser Claws A Thing The mecha Wolverine's laser claws isn't an original concept created for the Jeff Coast Avengers' contribution to Queen in Black. Twenty-four years before, the original Marvel Mangaverse introduced its own take on the X-Men, which included a white-haired Wolverine variant who possessed two sets of red-hot laser claws. Despite his unique brand of weapon, this version of Wolverine eventually loses an arm, kills Jean Grey, and is pushed to the background of his universe's overarching story. Twenty-four years later, a soft-rebooted Marvel Mangaverse returns with a new Wolverine, Laura Kinney aka Weapon X-Tremis. However, it's parallel to Weapon X-Tremis' debut in Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood that Wolverine's laser claws return in a different and completely unrelated timeline, as Earth-616 Wolverine briefly becomes his Mojo-designed armored counterpart thanks to the Mentellenorite's reality-warping powers. Considering Mecha Wolverine is handpicked to be a member of the Jeff Coast Avengers, his laser claws now have a high chance of becoming a recurring sight in the Marvel multiverse.
