Wolverine's Adamantium Faces Its Biggest Challenge of All Time

Although Wolverine was born with a normal skeleton and bone claws, those were forcibly coated with the indestructible metal known as adamantium during his time at Weapon X. Because of his healing factor, Logan survived the procedure carried out against his will. Now, his body can endure even more punishment, and his claws can cut through almost anything. Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Bullseye, and X-23 are among other characters who have adamantium fused into them in some form or fashion, and there have been many weapons forged from the metal. Of course, adamantium isn’t the only powerful metal in Marvel lore. Other examples include vibranium, which is the cornerstone of Wakandan technology and was used to make Captain America’s shield, and the magical uru, which was used to craft Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Wolverine's adamantium claws, however, will soon face their biggest challenge yet, thanks to a more recent addition to the Marvel list of super strong substances. Wolverine’s Adamantium Claws Are Going Up Against The Hag’s Somber Steel Marvel Comics Back in 2024’s Uncanny X-Men #3, Wolverine collided with the witch monster known as Sarah Gaunt, a.k.a. The Hag, who had been pursuing Rogue and her class of mutant students. Along with boasting super strength, The Hag’s nails are coated with a mystical metal called somber steel, which, along with being indestructible like adamantium, is also able to shapeshift. Wolverine and The Hag will collide again in October’s Uncanny X-Men #37, written by Gail Simone, and artwork by Juan Frigeri. Per the solicitation for the upcoming issue (via League of Comic Geeks), Wolverine will be protecting some of the X-Men who made it out of the “Wild Ride” story arc alive, albeit weakened. Unfortunately for him, Hag will resurface to cause trouble, necessitating him to once again pit his adamantium claws against her somber steel nails, and without any backup this time. Hag was most recently seen in June’s Uncanny X-Men #30. When Wolverine and Hag first met, the latter claimed that somber steel is made from the “melted blades of murderers,” and that those who wield this metal can hear the screams of the victims who empowered it. Somber steel was more than a match for Logan’s adamantium claws, with its shapeshifting property providing an additional advantage. Somber steel was also able to draw blood from Rogue, who’s normally invulnerable as a result of permanently absorbing Carol Danvers’ original Ms. Marvel powers. What Uncanny X-Men Has Revealed About The Hag Marvel Comics Both the frightening Hag and somber steel were introduced at the beginning of Simone’s Uncanny X-Men run. While her background was originally shrouded in mystery, it was later revealed that Sarah was originally a normal-looking human who met a young Charles Xavier at Oxford University and claimed to him that she was a witch. The two dated for a month, but their relationship ended when Xavier didn’t share Sarah’s interest in having a child together. Sarah did give birth to a son named Brian a year later, but she was under the delusion that Xavier was the father. Brian later died when he was swept away by a wave of water unleashed during a hurricane, while Sarah emerged from the devastation in her new monstrous form and desiring revenge. 17 years later, i.e. in the Marvel timeline’s present day, Sarah as The Hag targeted The Outliers, requiring them to seek help from the X-Men. Despite Hag initially overpowering Wolverine and Rogue, the latter recovered enough to break her opponent’s arms. Hag was subsequently thrown into the nightmare Graymalkin Prison, which was ironic since she previously worked for its warden, the sadistic Dr. Corina Ellis. Alas, she’ll be back in action for Uncanny X-Men #37, and Wolverine will once again have to deal with her solo. His adamantium claws will be put to the ultimate test against Hag’s somber steel nails, and it remains to be seen if more unique properties for the latter metal will be revealed.
