Wolverine Was The Best-Selling Game Of September In The US

Some of the games George has extensively covered first-hand include Dead Rising, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, Assassin's Creed Shadows, and Ninja Gaiden 4. Circana’s data confirms that Marvel’s Wolverine was the best-selling game of September in the US, despite the incredibly loud backlash it was up against. The culture of gaming is in a pretty rough place this generation, which is something that we’re reminded of whenever a new triple-A game releases. By far the biggest example of this in recent memory is Marvel’s Wolverine, which started as one of the most-anticipated PlayStation games on the horizon, before suddenly becoming the internet’s punching bag. From the somewhat more mixed reviews to features like the controversial “fart trail” gas, Wolverine couldn’t seem to escape controversy last month. Things did at least seem to get a little better when people played it for themselves, though, and it looks like a lot of people did, as Wolverine launched to some strong sales. Wolverine Topped September’s Charts In The US It’s Beaten By One Game In The EU, Though Earlier today, Mat Piscatella shared Circana’s projected physical and digital sales data for September, which puts Marvel’s Wolverine in the top spot above heavy-hitters like NBA 2K27, EA Sports FC 27, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Wardogs, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. It’s not just Cirana’s data that confirms Wolverine was a hit, though, as PlayStation also revealed September’s best-selling games on the PS Store. In the US, Marvel’s Wolverine is in first place, beating out EA Sports FC 27, NBA 2K27, Halloween, Dawnwalker, and Madden NFL 27, to name a few of the big dogs. In the EU, Wolverine fell to second place, with EA Sports FC 27 unsurprisingly taking the top spot. That’s still a big showing, though. While it shouldn’t really be a surprise to see a game starring one of Marvel’s most iconic characters doing so well, there was some doubt considering the mixed reviews and online hate campaign that seemed to be dragging it down. It’s a bit of a reminder of the Twitter echo chamber, and that most gamers will just pick up whatever’s big and new without caring that Wolverine’s face model had changed a bit. Now it just remains to be seen whether Wolverine’s sales can continue to be strong into the holiday season, or if it’s going to have a short shelf life. I’d be happy if it was the former, but I’m betting that it’ll be the latter considering the big GTA 6 elephant in the room. Still, it’s nice to see a win for Wolverine and Insomniac.
