Marvel's Wolverine User Reviews Are All Over The Place Published Sep 17, 2026, 8:30 AM EDT Marvel's Wolverine has been out for two days, which means that user scores have opened up on Metacritic. To little surprise, the scores are all over the place, with high and low scores being spammed by both sides of the Wolverine divide. This comes as Wolverine finds itself in an awkward position. Complaints about the game design have made this one of Insomniac's worst-received games in years. Unfortunately, it has also become a culture war target, with this legitimate criticism often drowned out by complaints about queer characters and "ugly" women. While an overall score of 6.5 could indicate that everyone thinks the game is decent, in this case, it's because the average is skewed by the tug of war between fans and detractors. Looking at a breakdown of the scores, we can see that 60% of them are positive, 32% are negative, and only 8% are average. "A $70 movie; the only gameplay is combat—and poor combat at that," reads a 1/10 review. "A perfect example of how consoles hold back the development of video games." "Why is it called a game when it plays itself?!" reads a 0/10 review. "No effort, no difficulty... just follow the blue trail, and the highly visible yellow marks, and objects shine so you won't miss them for sure." On the flip side, we have the perfect scores being spammed in a bid to counter this. "Great action game, shame it’s drowning in blind hatred," reads a 10/10 review. "A good story spiced up with fast-paced, bloody action. I recommend playing on the highest difficulty, where the game really challenges you and the combat system truly shines." Another player who left a 10/10 review admits that they think the game is really closer to an 8, but upped their score because of the negative reviews. "The game is definitely not a 0, a 3, or a 5," the reviewer says. "You don't have to buy the game, so why give bad reviews when these people haven't even bought it?" Really, the problem is that it is caught between both the culture war and the console wars. It's hard to get a measure of what a game is actually like when scores are being exaggerated like this, either to bring a game down or bring its opponents down. Either way, we'll have to see how Wolverine performed commercially. It had a very lengthy development, so it will likely have to perform very well to recoup costs.
