Even before it launched, Marvel’s Wolverine was consumed by a debate over “fart gas,” i.e. scent trails that Logan occasionally uses to locate objectives during some of the game’s missions. The much-dunked-on feature is now getting nerfed as Insomniac Games considers whether to give players the option to turn it off altogether. A surprise hotfix for Sony’s latest PlayStation 5 exclusive went live on September 19, and it didn’t just fix some of the game crashes certain players have been experiencing. It also reduced the opacity of scent trails that lead Logan to his next objective in different parts of the game. “Additionally, this hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense,” read the patch notes on Insomniac Games’ support page. “Our team continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update.” Wolverine scent trail hotfix before and after comparison https://t.co/zKEQD2t169 pic.twitter.com/TixRK7XUMO — Radec (@realradec) September 19, 2026 The changes were quickly tested by players and the results shared online. The “fart gas,” as some players had taken to calling it, was indeed dialed way back. Instead of a trail of neon gas, a pool of ambient color sits on the ground in front of Logan. It still basically tells you exactly where to go, but it’s less in your face about it. I’m not sure why Insomniac is holding off on the toggle, but I assume it will be possible to turn the feature off completely in the future. At the same time, it doesn’t really matter. While the scent trail became a flash point prior to the game’s release, removing it will not suddenly make Wolverine into an exploration-based walking sim. The action-adventure remains, at its core, a combat-based comic book blockbuster about shredding through goons to unlock the next cool cutscene. Fart gas or no, Wolverine is not an ambient open-world game like last year’s Ghost of Yotei. And that’s fine. I’m not here to pass judgment on the fart gas. There’s a dozen more interesting things happening in Wolverine to talk about.
