Published Sep 3, 2026, 1:05 PM EDT The Witcher 3 is getting a surprise remaster this month, launching on September 29. As well as updating the graphics, there are also going to be some gameplay changes, tweaking how we experience traversal and combat. Now, in an interview with Kotaku, The Witcher quest designer Paweł Sasko goes over what we can expect from these changes. Interestingly, he compares them to the updates in CD Projekt Red's other behemoth RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, which also saw changes made to the combat mechanics post-launch. It Sounds Like The Witcher 3's Remastered Update Is Even Bigger Than We Thought "When you look at The Witcher 3 and the opinions of players and press, gameplay is what was criticised most," Sasko says. "Having worked on update 2.0 for Cyberpunk, when we think about this remaster, it’s almost like a 2.0 overhaul [for The Witcher 3]." He goes on to explain exactly what he means by this. "We analysed what annoyed people most—like exploration, Geralt’s movement controls, and the lack of finisher [attacks]," he says. "That has all been addressed, and it makes the biggest difference in how the game feels to play." Now, he says it's "almost" like the Cyberpunk 2077 update, not exactly like it, which is worth keeping in mind here. However, any comparison whatsoever is a little surprising, given how much was changed with the Cyberpunk update. The entire skill tree and levelling-up system was redone, meaning that returning players had to respec their characters. Perhaps more relevant to this comparison, there were also combat changes that made everything a bit more fluid - but also more challenging. With that said, The Witcher 3 Remastered is also making changes to its skill tree. We'll be able to judge the results for ourselves soon enough. It doesn't seem like we'll be able to toggle off the changes being made with the remaster, unless you reverse the update on PC, so fingers crossed fans take to it well.
