Wipro is set to lose its place in the benchmark Nifty50 index after nearly three decades, with BSE Ltd selected to replace the IT services company in the latest semi-annual reshuffle of the index. The change will take effect from September 30, 2026, after the close of trading on September 29, according to the NSE Indices review. BSE's inclusion follows a sharp rise in its average free-float market capitalisation, which has now comfortably met the criteria for entry into the Nifty50.For Wipro, the move marks a significant change. The company has been part of the Nifty50 since the index was launched around three decades ago. The only previous exception was between April and September 2013, when Wipro was temporarily excluded following its corporate demerger.WHY IS BSE REPLACING WIPRO?The decision is primarily linked to the relative size of the companies based on free-float market capitalisation. BSE's six-month average free-float market capitalisation stood at Rs 1,40,879 crore, according to NSE Indices. In comparison, Wipro's six-month average free-float market capitalisation was Rs 55,930 crore. This means BSE's average free-float market capitalisation was at least 1.5 times that of Wipro, which is currently the Nifty50 constituent with the lowest six-month average free-float market capitalisation. The 1.5-times threshold is important because it determines whether another eligible company can replace a stock that falls out of the benchmark.BSE's market capitalisation comfortably cleared that requirement, paving the way for its inclusion in the index.WIPRO'S EXIT IS NOT BECAUSE BSE WAS THE ONLY CONTENDERBSE was not the only company considered for the vacancy.NSE Indices also evaluated TVS Motor Company and Divi's Laboratories for inclusion in the Nifty50.TVS Motor had an average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 84,566 crore, while Divi's Laboratories stood at Rs 82,930 crore. However, neither was selected. The reason was that after Wipro's exclusion, the two lowest-ranked companies among the remaining Nifty 50 constituents — HDFC Life Insurance Company and Tata Consumer Products — did not meet the required 1.5-times threshold when compared with the potential entrants.HDFC Life had an average free-float market capitalisation of Rs 65,666 crore, while Tata Consumer Products stood at Rs 73,054 crore.BSE, therefore, emerged as the company that met the required criteria for the Nifty 50 inclusion.WHAT CHANGES FOR WIPRO?The biggest change is Wipro's position in India's flagship stock market index. The company will no longer be part of the Nifty50 from September 30.The latest index change does not mean Wipro is leaving the stock market. The development is specifically about its removal from the Nifty50 benchmark.Wipro's exit also marks the end of its long run as one of the companies represented in the country's most closely tracked equity index, apart from its brief exclusion during the 2013 demerger.WHAT DOES BSE'S ENTRY MEAN?For BSE, the inclusion represents a significant elevation in its position among India's largest and most closely tracked companies. The exchange operator has seen its free-float market capitalisation rise sharply enough to qualify for the Nifty 50, with its six-month average reaching Rs 1,40,879 crore.BSE's inclusion will also be reflected in the Nifty50 Equal Weight Index. The Nifty 50 is one of India's most widely tracked equity benchmarks, so BSE's entry will put the exchange operator among the companies represented in the country's flagship index. The reshuffle will become effective from September 30, 2026.Trading on September 29 will be the last session before the new composition takes effect. From September 30, BSE will be part of the Nifty 50, while Wipro will no longer be a constituent. The change is part of NSE Indices' semi-annual review of broad-market indices, which has also resulted in changes to several other benchmarks, including the Nifty 100, Nifty 500, Nifty Midcap 150, Nifty Smallcap 250, Nifty Next 50, Nifty Next 100 and Nifty India FPI 150 Index. For investors, the key takeaway is therefore straightforward: Wipro's nearly three-decade presence in the Nifty 50 is coming to an end, and BSE will take its place from September 30 after meeting the index's free-float market capitalisation criteria.(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group.
