To truly rival the seamless pick-up and play experience of the Steam Deck, alternative handhelds must look past raw CPU and GPU performance and address the fundamental software bottlenecks of input latency, power state management, and system-level display compositing. Hardware isn't the be all, end all Specifications don't mean everything Hardware has improved pretty exponentially with handheld PCs over the past couple of years. The average handheld from a few years ago simply can't compete with the top-spec AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme paired with RDNA 3.5 graphics, up to 32 GB of RAM, and massive high-refresh-rate OLED panels that can be found on the latest gaming handhelds. Brands like Asus and Lenovo constantly signal that a generational leap in chip architecture or a higher maximum wattage ceiling is the silver bullet for handheld superiority. While the hardware is fundamental, these raw hardware numbers alone do not equate to real-world usability. In mobile gaming, raw silicon capability is meaningless if the underlying software layer treats the device like an office desktop. SteamOS has set an amazing precedent for what handheld gaming should feel like. One of the true points of luxury of a handheld console is the ability to suspend and resume gameplay instantly, and SteamOS has nailed that, leveraging the Linux kernel to execute a clean, low-overhead suspend-to-RAM pipeline. This means that your game state is preserved while the device drops system power draw to near zero in milliseconds. The equivalent on Windows is the modern standby on mobile APUs. Putting a Windows handheld to sleep does not freeze the game engine. It instead just requests a lower power state while keeping background system processes, telemetry, and network threads active. In practical terms, this means when turning the device back on, your game state may not remain exactly as you left it, which could result in crashes, freezes, and loss of progress. The device can be woken up by telemetry or even an accidental touch of the screen during this sleep state. This leads to challenges like your device waking up in its travel case and a high idle battery drain with thermal buildup that can throttle the APU before you've even turned the screen back on. SteamOS has so many perks Windows just can't compete right now Another amazing feature of SteamOS is the gamepad integration. SteamOS treats the gamepad, which is built into the Steam Deck, as the primary system controller. This means that every game mode menu overlay and prompt is built directly on top of controller input APIs, creating an intuitive unified interface. The alternative on Windows gaming handhelds are proprietary launch overlays like Asus Armoury Crate SE and Lenovo Legion Space. No matter how polished the software skins look, they remain as layers or overlays simply running on top of Windows 11. This means you can easily encounter the loss of window focus on Windows-based systems. A background pop-up, a digital storefront update, or a user account control prompt can shift the active focus away from the game, completely disabling controller inputs until the user manually touches the screen to re-focus the window. One of the major secret weapons that Valve has is the Gamescope micro-compositor. Gamescope acts as an isolated window manager, allowing the operating system to control the display output independently of the running game engine. This means you get features like system-wide AMD FSR, integer scaling, and refresh rate adjustments to be toggled instantly via a sidebar without needing to jump into game settings, menus, or graphics driver control panels. Compare this to the clunky resolution scaling on Windows handhelds and it's a whole different ballgame. Windows handhelds require you to change resolutions or turn on upscaling features within complex in-game menus. This means you might deal with screen flickering or issues with scaling mismatches that distort the user interface. Software optimization needs to be a priority Or a switch to SteamOS will continue to be a no-brainer The hardware featured on a lot of Windows gaming handhelds is absolutely spectacular. A lot of the internal specifications beat the Steam Deck by a mile. However, the operating system lets the device down so dramatically that enthusiasts are turning to community-driven operating systems like Bazzite and CachyOS to escape Windows on their premium handhelds. This is because you can often achieve better frame pacing and lower system overhead on the same hardware thanks to these better optimized operating systems. Some manufacturers are noticing this, made evident by the fact that Lenovo is offering official SteamOS factory SKUs for their handheld hardware. When it comes to operating system choice, SteamOS is the clear favorite. The combination of high-end premium hardware with an optimized console-first operating system represents the true future of the category. It provides users with the best of both worlds, like high refresh rate OLED panels and powerful processors paired with a seamless console-like software experience. It's unfair that, at the minute, users have to seemingly pick one or the other. Stop chasing silicon Chase software instead As much as manufacturers shout about the specifications of the latest gaming handheld, the handheld PC will not be decided by who has the highest clock speed or the latest silicon. While hardware innovation obviously remains vital, the user experience is ultimately defined by the software that connects the player to the game.
