Windows 10 users are getting locked out of new Microsoft 365 features in a bid to push for Windows 11

OneDrive desktop will still get feature updates, but only on Windows 10 version 22H2; older builds get none. Version 2608 is in release preview now; once it goes stable, Microsoft 365 feature updates for Windows 10 will cease. Microsoft has had a hard time trying to convince people to move to Windows 11. While data does suggest that there are now more Windows 11 users than Windows 10 users, there are still some stalwart people holding on to the older OS. Now, Microsoft is prodding them to upgrade by limiting new Microsoft 365 features. Windows 10 holdouts will stop getting new features for Microsoft 365 And they'll lose all support in October 2028 As spotted by Windows Latest, Microsoft has published a document on its Learn website. Titled "Windows 10 end of support and Microsoft 365 Apps," the company goes over what Windows 10 users can expect from Microsoft 365 in the future. Amid all the information is this nugget: Devices running Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will receive feature updates and Copilot support (where eligible) until Version 2608 is released. Devices will remain on Version 2608, receiving only security updates until October 10, 2028. Essentially, once version 2608 comes out, Windows 10 machines will no longer receive new features or tools for Microsoft 365. They will instead receive only security updates until October 2028, the same day that Windows 10 itself falls out of extended security support. Interestingly, there is one exception to this rule: the OneDrive desktop app. This will continue receiving new updates until October 2028, but only if you're on Windows 10 version 22H2. Anything older, and you won't receive any updates. So, we come to the million-dollar question: when does 'version 2608' actually release? Right now, the stable branch for Microsoft 365 is running version 2607; however, as stated on Microsoft Learn, version 2608 is currently making its way through the release preview channel. Once it hits stable, that's it for Windows 10 users; they will receive no more features and be put on a security-only patch feed until it's cut off in late 2028.
