Prince William should end his feud with Harry and reconcile for the sake of the country if he wants to be King in the future, Peter Hitchens has argued.The longstanding Mail on Sunday columnist also spoke about ending his own estrangement with his brother Christopher on the latest Alas Vine & Hitchens podcast.While the Prince of Wales is reportedly in no mood to patch things up with the Duke of Sussex, Hitchens believes he will need to swallow his pride and put nation about personal feelings. 'For the sake of the country, I think a reconciliation both personal and public is essential,' Hitchens said.'They can't go on living in the same country in the state of hostility that now exists - it can't go on with doing serious damage to the whole place.' Sarah Vine added: 'It's tough on William, because he's going to have to be the bigger of the two.'As part of a infamous brotherly journalistic double act with brother Christopher, Hitchens and his sibling fell out over questions of faith and politics. Hitchens said: 'Relationships between brothers can be very difficult. I had a reconciliation with my own. The Prince and Princess of Wales, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who returned to the UK for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022, the last time it is believed the brothers last spoke to each other 'Do it, as soon as you can. Don't mess around. The row was not on my side but he was persuaded by other people that that he should make up the quarrel, and did so, and it was an entirely good thing without any disadvantages at all, which he didn't regret. I think if if we had been unreconciled when that happened, it would have been appalling.'Hitchens recounted an exchange of letters with his brother to try and bring the feud about - but to no avail.'It wasn't that I was not doing anything. I mean, I made several gestures to try and bring it to an end, which were initially rebuffed. 'I must tell you, we had an exchange of letters, which I hope has been destroyed, in which we really put it to each other pretty strongly. 'But it was intended by me to bring about a reconciliation, but at that time it didn't. So the fact that you're the you you think you're the wrong party doesn't actually excuse you from making an effort to bring it to an end.'Sarah also shared her story of her reconciliation with her father before his death - one she has written about movingly before for the Daily Mail. 'It would be great for William and Harry to reconcile because I had a similar thing, but not quite the same, but with my father, and we did reconcile before he died, and I think it really so important. 'I think you get to stage in life where you realise that there are things that are just more important than whatever row it is that you've had over whatever thing it is.' He said: 'I think there's a fun up to a point. I enjoy a good row, within limits according to Queensberry rules myself. 'And christophe loved a row. He he once had a several years long quarrel with probably the nicest man in the world, a poet called James Fenton. 'They disagreed about the Falklands War, and for ages he wouldn't speak to him. How anyone could have a row with James? 'I still don't know.
