One of the questions ahead of Will Stein’s first SEC Media Days appearance was whether his confidence would travel to the big stage. Stein turned heads in Lexington with his “everybody wants to play for Will Stein” comment during his introductory press conference in January. He doubled down during a spring interview with KSR, telling Matt Jones, “If you’re scared, go to church,” when asked about Kentucky’s daunting schedule, widely considered one of the toughest in the country. But would Stein take that juice to SEC Media Days, where Kentucky found itself in rare air, speaking on Day 1 with the conference’s biggest audience watching? Absolutely. Confidence has never been in short supply for Stein, and it wasn’t Monday in Tampa, either. During his debut at the SEC Media Days podium, Kentucky’s first-time head ball coach puffed out his chest and delivered another quote that has Big Blue Nation salivating for football season in Lexington. Asked by KSR’s own Adam Luckett why he believes he can win at a school that has historically been near the bottom of the league, Stein smiled, paused for a beat and then answered, “I think because of me, to be honest. I think ’cause of me.” “You just got to believe, man. You just got to put the ball down and play. There’s really nothing else to be said,” he added. “I know the players that we can get here. I know we can recruit north, south and east. People come to Lexington, and love it. The longer I live there, the more I am like, wow, this place is incredible. It’s got everything that you want. It’s got great food, nightlife, community, university, it’s safe. Big Blue Nation. It takes some TLC. You have to go attack. You can’t sit back and wait. That’s one thing I refuse to do at Kentucky is wait.” The quote quickly made the rounds on social media, drawing comparisons to Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, who famously declared, “I win. Google me.” before leading the Hoosiers to the College Football Playoff in his first season, followed by a national championship in his second. The clip has also replayed repeatedly on the SEC Network, coming in and out of commercial breaks throughout the afternoon. Stein wasn’t trying to imitate Cignetti, but neither lacked confidence in taking over schools with more basketball success than football. More than that one quote, though, Stein’s confidence was on display for his entire SEC Media Days appearance on Monday. Attack. Fight. Don’t wait. When asked about the inevitable adversity that comes with coaching in the SEC, Stein made it clear he isn’t interested in a team that feels sorry for itself. “The one thing I refuse to be is soft-minded,” Stein said during his opening statement. “I understand, I’ve already accepted myself that there will be tough moments this season… Our response as a team will dictate the outcomes. I cannot wait to fight adversity with this group.” That fighting mindset also shapes his goals for the program. “I took the job to win, and to win at championship levels,” he explained. “Our process has to be elite from top down for that to happen.” Later, discussing Kentucky’s approach in the transfer portal and recruiting elite talent to Lexington, he doubled down, saying the Wildcats won’t be any good without good players. “Go big game fishing, not sit back and wait for somebody to decide they want to go to Kentucky,” Stein said. Whether he was discussing recruiting, handling adversity or explaining why he took the Kentucky job in the first place, Stein’s message never changed. He believes the Wildcats can win, he believes Kentucky belongs competing with the SEC’s best and, most importantly, he isn’t afraid to say it on the conference’s biggest stage with the UK emblem behind him. Kentucky fans have heard past coaches preach patience and hard work before. Stein’s message Monday and throughout the offseason was the opposite: believe and attack. Time will tell if Stein’s philosophy translates into wins at Kroger Field and around the South. Kentucky still has to play one of the nation’s toughest schedules, and confidence alone won’t beat SEC opponents. But if there was any doubt whether Stein would tone it down under the bright lights at SEC Media Days, Monday answered it. The coach who challenges expectations in Lexington brought that same swagger to Tampa, introducing the rest of the SEC to the version of Will Stein that Big Blue Nation has rallied behind since the day he was hired.
