Will Phoebe Bridgers Join This List of Artists Who Have Landed Grammy Nods for Album of the Year Both Solo and in a Group?

Michael Buckner/Billboard Phoebe Bridgers’ third solo studio album, Lost Weekend, has gotten rave reviews, as seen by its sky-high 91 rating at Metacritic.com. It is also off to a fast start on music charts worldwide. On Friday (Aug. 21), it entered the Official U.K. Albums chart at No. 1. Two days later, it was announced that it entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2. With all this going for it, Lost Weekend is very likely to receive a Grammy nod for album of the year, a feat Bridgers achieved three years ago as a member of the supergroup Boygenius, which was nominated for its first full-length, The Record. (The album wound up losing to Taylor Swift’s Midnights. The pop megastar, who is also likely to be an album of the year contender for The Life of a Showgirl, generously touted Bridgers’ new album on her Instagram story. “It’s her birthday but she gave us a gift,” Swift wrote. “Haven’t been able to stop listening. This album is an absolute triumph in every way.”) If Lost Weekend lands an album of the year nod, Bridgers will become just the 12th artist to be nominated in that category both as a lead solo artist and as a part of a named group or duo since the Grammys were first presented in 1959. The Fine Print for that stat: We’re not counting artists who scored album of the year nods as featured artists on other artists’ albums. Nor are we counting artists who landed album of the year nods both solo and as a part of an unnamed collaboration with one or more other solo artists (such as Frank Sinatra, both on his own and alongside Antônio Carlos Jobim; Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, both on their own and for a collab; and Linda Ronstadt, both on her own and alongside Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris). Nor are we counting artists who have landed album of the year nods as part of two collaborations, namely Stan Getz (with Charlie Byrd and later João Gilberto). Here’s a complete list of all artists who have been nominated for album of the year both as a lead solo artist and as a part of a named group or duo. The Beatles/Three of the four solo Beatles The Beatles were nominated for album of the year in a record five consecutive years (1966-70), winning in 1968 for the landmark Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Since the group split in 1970, Paul McCartney has been nominated as a solo artist in the category three times; George Harrison, twice; and John Lennon, once (in tandem with Yoko Ono). In addition, Ringo Starr was nominated (and won) as a featured artist on the Harrison-led The Concert for Bangla Desh. Simon & Garfunkel/Paul Simon Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were nominated for album of the year twice, for their last two studio albums: Bookends (1969)and Bridge Over Troubled Water (1971, which won). That’s called going out on top. On his own, Simon has been nominated five times, winning for Still Crazy After All These Years (1976)and Graceland (1987). Paul McCartney and Wings/Paul McCartney Paul McCartney and Wings were nominated for Band on the Run in 1975. McCartney has subsequently been nominated for three solo albums: Tug of War (1983), Flaming Pie (1998) and Chaos and Creation in the Backyard (2006). Eagles/Don Henley Eagles were nominated for album of the year twice, with the back-to-back studio albums One of These Nights (1976) and Hotel California (1978). Henley was nominated once for his third solo studio album, The End of the Innocence (1990). Steely Dan/Donald Fagen Steely Dan was nominated for three consecutive studio albums: Aja (1978),Gaucho (1982) and Two Against Nature (2001), winning for the latter album. Fagen was nominated twice, for his first two solo albums, The Nightfly (1983) and Kamakiriad (1994). For Fagen, these were five consecutive studio projects nominated for AOTY – a remarkable feat. The Police/Sting The Police were nominated in 1984 for their fifth and final studio album, Synchronicity. Sting was nominated for three of his first four solo studio albums: The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1986), …Nothing Like the Sun (1989) and Ten Summoner’s Tales (1994). Prince and the Revolution/Prince Prince and the Revolution were nominated for the Purple Rain soundtrack in 1985. Prince was credited as a solo artist when he was nominated for Sign o’ the Times in 1988. The Traveling Wilburys/Three of the five Wilburys The Traveling Wilburys were nominated for their debut album, Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1, in 1990. Three of the five members of the group have been nominated apart from that collective – Bob Dylan, twice (plus once as a featured artist on the all-star The Concert for Bangla Desh); George Harrison, twice; and Tom Petty, once. Petty’s solo debut, Full Moon Fever, competed with the Wilburys project for album of the year. (Bonnie Raitt’s Nick of Time beat both to take home the prize.) Fugees/Lauryn Hill The Fugees were nominated for their second and final album, The Score (1997). Two years later, Hill was nominated for her solo debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which won. OutKast/André 3000 OutKast was nominated with back-to-back studio albums, Stankonia (2002) and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2004), the latter of which won. André 3000 was nominated for his solo debut, New Blue Sun (2025). The White Stripes/Jack White The White Stripes were nominated for their fourth studio album, Elephant (2004).
