The stewards’ report read: “An enquiry was held to consider the circumstances surrounding why a dog appeared on the track, approximately two furlongs out. The dog in question ran out from the stands side, suggesting he had been in or near one of the enclosures. However, members of the public are allowed to walk their dog on the Downs so it’s possible they got loose in another way. Whatever happened, it was lucky no animal – or jockey for that matter – was harmed given it doesn’t take much for a horse to fling their rider off at 40mph.
