Wi-Fi 7 routers and network cards are finally becoming affordable and commonplace, but if you're a homelabber or someone who just enjoys any sort of self-hosting, you probably haven't had a pressing reason to upgrade to this latest standard. Sure, Wi-Fi 7 is quite a bit faster than what's come before, but is that what your homelab needs? I don't think so, but Wi-Fi 8 might bring exactly the changes you've been waiting for. Wi-Fi doesn’t need a higher top speed—it needs to stop being unpredictable Consistency is key Wi-Fi 7 is enormously fast. So much so, that under decent conditions it can compete with some forms of Ethernet in terms of total throughput. All the improvements that Wi-Fi 7 brought to the table are welcome. However, greater speed is only one aspect of performance and connection quality. Latency spikes happen whether you're pushing 100Mbps or a Gigabit over the airwaves. It doesn't change the hiccups that happen as you roam around your Wi-Fi coverage area, or prevent problems that crop up at the limits of said coverage. I've written before that Wi-Fi 7 routers are still bad at the things most people actually need from them. Namely, improved range. Even if you try to extend your Wi-Fi range with aluminum foil, the core technology isn't optimized for performance at range. However, that seems set to change. Wi-Fi 8 measures the performance problems homelabbers actually experience Quality over quantity Credit: Intel Corporation Intel's Wi-Fi 8 white paper really spells out how this new generation of wireless technology is different in its approach: Unlike previous generations that focused primarily on peak speeds, Wi-Fi 8 is designed to deliver ultra-high reliability, intelligent and context-aware networking, and deterministic performance. As the demand for robust, low-latency, and high-throughput connections increases across both consumer and enterprise environments, Wi-Fi 8 addresses these needs by ensuring consistent performance—even in congested or mobile scenarios such as homes, offices, and airports. Basically, Wi-Fi 8 has a strong focus on QoS (Quality of Service) as opposed to outright speed. And, who can blame them? Wi-Fi 7 is already faster than most people will need their home networks to be for a long time. It's a little like how cars can only get so fast before any additional speed is moot and brings no benefits. So, instead, engineers can focus on things like safety, comfort, and reliability. Wi-Fi technology seems to have reached that point. That's important, because latency, consistency, and reliability are all areas a $5 Ethernet cable still has a $500 Wi-Fi 7 router beat. So the design goals for Wi-Fi 8 are focused on real-world, worst-case scenarios. That's a big change from only getting those lab-condition theoretical performance figures with each generation. Numbers no one ever actually sees in real life. According to the literature, Wi-Fi 8 has a few key areas targeted for improvement: 25% greater throughput at a given signal-to-interference-and-noise level 25% lower latency at the 95th percentile 25% fewer lost packets, particularly while moving between access points That "95th percentile" goal is important. It's a bit like the "1% lows" in video game benchmarks. Looking at the worst 5% latency spikes tells you a more useful story than looking at the average latency across the board. If you can improve the worst-case spikes, that's going to have a profound impact on your subjective experience when doing any latency-sensitive network tasks. For people who self-host or use local network apps like wireless PCVR, Steam Remote Play, Moonlight, locally hosted voice assistants, IP cameras, and copying files from a NAS, it's going to offer a substantial qualitative improvement. The stuff in your homelab and smart home setup are probably cheap, older IoT devices running on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and there's undoubtedly a few older Raspberry Pis you have no reason to throw away. Wi-Fi 8's technical specs allow it to give older and more distant devices special treatment. It can give them dedicated sub-bands. This means that your other faster devices don't have to be dragged down by a lowest common denominator. Thanks to an "extended range" mode, you can likely also get away with fewer mesh units, or just one central router. Wi-Fi 8 looks worth waiting for Wi-Fi 8 is already being tested, and its real-world performance seems to live up to the hype. Routers are already going up for pre-orders, and so I expect early adopters with deep pockets to have them in 2027. At this point, we can see whether the upgrade will finally be worth it. Since we are so close, I recommend that self-hosters and homelabbers who are on Wi-Fi 5, 6, or 6E just wait and see. While upgrading might net you a bit of speed now, Wi-Fi 8 could be truly transformative.
