Why I pay for a weather app when so many great free options exist

And while there are hundreds of ways to watch and track the weather, including dozens of free apps, I still happily pay for a weather app, and here's why. If you're trying to decide what clothes to wear, determine road conditions before a drive, or track a potentially dangerous storm or vicious downpour, having easily accessible yet accurate information is important. I've used countless free apps, mostly packed with ads, and many phones have a basic built-in weather app and widget, but I want more. Better data and radar without ads Forecasts, wind maps, minute-by-minute rain info, and more Don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest fan of a monthly or yearly subscription for a weather service and app, especially given how many great free resources exist. I'm talking about the National Weather Service (NWS) or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), to name a few. Unfortunately, Samsung and Google refuse to improve their built-in apps, and many third-party options are either limited or full of ads. These days, there are endless ways to get fairly accurate weather information. However, I want it all readily available right on my phone, fully customizable, and packed with information specific to me and my location. That's a big reason I pay for a weather app. Stock weather apps often lack more advanced features. Most people want to check the current temperature, the daily forecast, or look for rain, and maybe a few extras, but mostly just the essentials. So, that's what most stock weather apps provide. With a paid weather app, I get vastly better data, local information, hyper-local radar, minute-by-minute rain alerts, UV index, humidity, customized alerts, and several advanced features. Paid apps often have dynamic multi-layered radar, more widgets, and multiple weather providers to choose from. The entire experience and data are more localized, personalized, and better suited to meet my needs. Most stock apps don't have radar maps at all, and considering I live somewhere with heavy rains, hail threats, and frequent tornadoes, being able to easily and instantly check the radar right on my phone is essential. More importantly, I have a delightful weather widget full of information and features to help me when I need it most. A weather app perfect for your individual needs You'll find dozens of great weather apps on the Google Play Store, but if you want the best experience, you'll have to pay for it or deal with ads. I don't want to see a bunch of ads on my screen, and I want the best weather widget possible, with extra features, which is why I pay for something like Overdrop Weather & Widgets. One of the best aspects of Android is the endless customization, but many stock apps or basic third-party weather apps are quite limited. Sure, Samsung or Google's stock apps have a few different widgets and a couple of controls, but that's not enough for me. I want endless widget options, and a widget that does more than simply show me the weather. Many of the best paid weather apps for Android or iPhone do exactly that, and you won't get all those benefits unless you pay up. As mentioned above, Overdrop Weather offers over 70 gorgeous weather widgets, immersive themes, advanced metrics, 7-day forecasts, dynamic radar, and shortcuts for other things like a clock, calendar, battery life, and more. I can see absolutely everything I need and then some from four different weather providers; there are no ads, I get more themes, access to all the widgets, and can completely tune the app for a more personalized experience. The weather widget shown above displays the weather, a quick-glance icon indicating it's sunny out, the time, and the date. One tap opens the app, which is full of extra information. Then, many paid weather apps offer shortcuts, and that's their real superpower. Things like the date and time in the widget are fully customizable shortcuts that launch other apps. I have it set up so when I tap on the time, the Overdrop widget opens my clock app to quickly set an alarm at night. I don't have to dig for my alarm or clock app—it's right on the home screen paired to my paid weather app. Tapping the date opens my preferred calendar, making it easy to check my schedule. Essentially, this one weather widget does the job of several apps. I can check the weather, tap in to view the radar, check temperatures for the week, or instantly launch my clock app and set an alarm. For years, I used an app called HD Widgets, but it's no longer available. Now, I pay for a full-featured and all-in-one weather app that does it all. Get more from your weather app Many people will be completely satisfied with the stock weather app that came with their phone, or they will end up using a third-party app that'll likely have ads. And yes, there are decent ad-free apps around, but when you want it all, you'll probably need to buy one. That said, you get what you pay for, and that's a better experience in every facet. If you're like me and want a great experience, zero ads, beautiful widgets, and endless customization, you have several paid options.
