(Representative Image: Pexels)The Lakhisarai temple stampede in Bihar, in which seven devotees were killed and more than a dozen injured, has once again brought stampede safety into focus. The incident took place at Ashok Dham Temple on Monday as a large number of devotees gathered for the third Monday of Shravan.Reports said panic followed an electric wire snapping, while officials also pointed to the heavy crowd and a possible failure of barricading. But why do stampedes happen, and what should you do if you find yourself caught in one?A crowd does not necessarily need to be running for a deadly crush to occur. When too many people are packed into a limited space, even a sudden movement, rumour or perceived danger can create intense pressure.WHY DO STAMPEDES HAPPEN?A crowd crush can begin when a large number of people are concentrated in a confined or poorly managed space. A sudden threat, panic or loss of available space can disrupt the normal movement of the crowd and increase physical pressure between people. Narrow passages, blocked routes, inadequate exits, overcrowding and poorly managed entry and exit points can make the situation worse. Crowds can also become dangerous when people at the back continue moving forward while those ahead have nowhere to go.WHAT HAPPENS IN A CROWD CRUSH?The biggest danger is not necessarily people being trampled. Extreme crowd density can compress people's bodies so tightly that they struggle to breathe. A person who falls can also be unable to get back up because of the pressure around them. This is why stampede safety is largely about avoiding a fall and getting away from the most crowded section as early as possible.HOW TO STAY SAFE IN A CROWDED PLACEIf you are attending a temple, concert, festival, sporting event or any other large gathering, look for exits and less crowded routes before the situation becomes difficult. If the crowd starts becoming too dense:Stay on your feet. Falling can make it extremely difficult to get up.Keep your hands near your chest, with your elbows slightly out. This can help protect your breathing space.Do not push against the crowd. Move with the flow while looking for an opportunity to move towards the edge.Avoid bottlenecks, such as narrow gates, stairways and tightly packed barricades. If movement pauses, move diagonally towards the edge rather than trying to push directly against the crowd. If you fall, curl into a ball and protect your head and chest, then try to get up when there is an opportunity.THE FIRST RULE: DO NOT WAIT FOR THE CROWD TO BECOME DANGEROUSOne of the simplest ways to reduce your risk is to leave a gathering when you notice that the crowd is becoming uncomfortably dense. If you still have room to move, use it.The safest exit is not always the most obvious one. A popular gate can quickly become the most crowded point, so look for alternative routes if they are available.- EndsPublished By: vaishnavi parasharPublished On: Aug 17, 2026 11:12 IST
