Why Arsenal winning the Community Shield could be a BAD OMEN for their Premier League title chances

ARSENAL battered Manchester City 3-0 at the Principality Stadium to lift the Community Shield on Sunday afternoon. But Gooners may have to shield their eyes when they realise the bad omen that comes from winning the pre-season curtain raiser. In fact, the Sky Blues have gone on to win the title the last THREE times that they have lost the Community Shield; in 2021, 2022 and 2023. And the last two occasions on which they’ve won it, in 2024 and 2019, City have actually gone on to surrender their Prem title. Arsenal, meanwhile, have won the Community Shield 18 times in their history – with nine of those triumphs coming in the Premier League era. Remarkably, the Gunners have not won the title after any of their nine successes. And after Arsenal beat Manchester United in 1998, the Red Devils even went on to win the Treble. The last team to win the title after earning the Community Shield was Man City in 2018/19. And it has only occurred in eight seasons in Premier League history. Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man Utd did the Community Shield-Premier League title double on five occasions; in 1993-94, 1996–97, 2007–08, 2008–09 and 2010–11. Chelsea did it twice, once under Jose Mourinho in 2005-06 and again with Carlo Ancelotti in 2009-10. Sergio Aguero grabbed both goals for City, who had won the Prem with 100 points the previous season. Undeterred by past omens, Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard, who scored to put his side 3-0 up in Cardiff, declared that his side “showed our level” and “want to win everything”. And his manager Mikel Arteta added: “We know that it is going to demand something special – and we are going to go for it. “We know what it’s going to take, we know the difficulty of the task. That’s why we’ve never done it in the club, to win it again. “The desire comes with saying ‘I want to live that moment again. I want to live other moments even bigger than that’. “There is more belief, we know how to do it, what it takes to win it, that was the biggest asset of the team. To play in the manner we did is extremely impressive.” The Gunners will begin their title defence by hosting Coventry City on Friday night, desperate to prove any naysayers wrong.
