Why Are These Huge Arc’teryx Boots Suddenly Going Viral?

If you’ve forgotten, the cult Canadian outdoors label went viral when young men on TikTok began filming themselves in the shower to demonstrate the hypnotic water-repelling ability of their Gore-Tex jackets. The attention only seemed to further cement Arc’teryx’s techy outerwear as an inescapable part of the menswear landscape. Now, the Vancouver brand appears to have another crossover hit on its hands: a hulking beast of a winter boot.The Postour is a two-in-one design that combines a weatherproof outer boot with a removable insulated slipper tucked inside. In what the brand calls “full-boot mode,” the high collar cinches shut with a utility cord, sealing you off from the elements. The idea is that you can spend the day stomping through snow and slush, then shed the outer shell and lounge around in the slippers. Though it almost looks like a chalk bag sprouted a foot, the silhouette still carries the sleek, hyperfunctional minimalism the brand is known and loved for. The oddness of the design seems to be part of the appeal.Courtesy of Arc'teryxCourtesy of Arc'teryxNaturally, it’s equipped with all the technical bells and whistles you’d expect from Arc’teryx: a gnarly Vibram Arctic Grip outsole, weatherproof Gore-Tex shell, and the label’s proprietary Coreloft insulation. Perhaps most covetably, there’s also a giant skeletal bird logo—known to diehards as the “deadbird”—on the side. The same logo has helped make the brand’s beanies a favorite of everyone from Timothée Chalamet to Frank Ocean.Much like Arc’teryx’s Gore-Tex jackets before it, the Postour has become unmissable on the men’s side of the fashion algorithm. It’s a viral object of desire for a certain type of menswear guy fluent in microtrends. (This is hardly the first time we’ve seen a polarizing boot take over the algorithm, after all.) The is-this-ugly-or-cool discourse only adds fuel to the fire—and the fact that the boots resemble a sought-after design from Yeezy Season 8 certainly doesn’t hurt. TikTok and Instagram are chock full with videos of dudes excitedly unboxing their boots, blasting them with hoses, and customizing them with colored wax. As a result of all this digital buzz, the $300 boot has been drifting in and out of stock on the official Arc’teryx website. At one point last week, it was fully sold out; as of press time, only a couple of sizes remain in stock (though REI currently has a full size run).Of course, winter footwear has its own pantheon of heavy hitters, from L.L.Bean’s iconic Bean Boot to Sorel’s felt-lined stompers and Timberland’s “40 Below” Super Boot. Whether the Postour will earn a place alongside those classics remains to be seen. For now, Arc’teryx has made the rare winter boot that’s as hyped up online as it is useful in a snowstorm.
