Why are B.C. firefighters still using wildfire data from the 1990s?

Wildfires in British Columbia's Southern Interior have become more intense and unpredictable due to prolonged drought, posing challenges for firefighters and modelling software. The models currently used are based on data collected over 30 years ago, when extreme fire behavior was less frequent, partly due to less frequent droughts associated with climate change. This outdated data is hampering the accuracy of predictions, making it harder for firefighters to prepare and respond effectively to these increasingly severe wildfires, highlighting the urgent need for updated data to better combat modern fire threats.
