Who Is Mr. Nas & 9 Other Questions We Have After American Horror Story Season 13's Premiere

Sign in to your ScreenRant account American Horror Story is back with its highly anticipated 13th season, and the first three episodes left some big questions that will hopefully be answered before the season finale. Despite some weak recent seasons, most notably Delicate, American Horror Story is still one of the best horror TV shows of all time, as well as one of the most popular ones. The show’s 13th season quickly became one of the most anticipated TV returns of the year, in large part due to all its returning characters. American Horror Story: 13 is the second crossover season in the show’s history, with season 8, Apocalypse, being the first. 13 is bringing back frequent collaborators Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, and many more, with most of them reprising one or more of their past characters. American Horror Story: 13 premiered on September 24 with three episodes, and even now, plot details are still mostly unknown. The first three episodes of American Horror Story: 13 introduced viewers to Ben DeSoto (Joey Pollari), a hospice caregiver who survived a catastrophic plane crash and is hired to look after Mr. Nas after Constance Langdon’s (Lange) shift. Ben has a pathological fear of the number 13, and it’s everywhere at Mr. Nas’ home. Constance is planning something, and one night, she brings back some deceased characters from past seasons, which only added more questions about the first episodes of 13. Who/What Is Mr. Nas? The biggest mystery right now in American Horror Story: 13 is who or what is Mr. Nas. Ben’s patient is a very old man, but he looks very similar to Nosferatu, having some deformities that don’t look human. Mr. Nas doesn’t talk, but he is aware of his surroundings, and Mr. Phibes (John Waters) takes blood samples from him as standard procedure due to Mr. Nas’ advanced age. What’s even more alarming about Mr. Nas is that he sometimes gets up at night, walks to one of the windows, and starts vomiting a thick black substance. Although Constance brushes this off by explaining to Ben that it’s just residual blood from Mr. Nas’ ulcers, Ben (and the audience) know there’s something very sinister about Mr. Nas. Why Do Constance & Mr. Phibes Want To Age Mr. Nas? Constance is Mr. Nas’ hospice caregiver during the day, and as such, she’s present when Mr. Phibes takes the 13 blood samples. Mr. Phibes claims it’s all to keep track of Mr. Nas’ health, but Ben overhears a conversation between him and Constance that raises some flags. Ben is told Mr. Nas is 87, and Constance and Mr. Phibes talk about how he went from 87 to 90 years old in just a couple of days, with Constance celebrating it. It’s understood that whatever Mr. Phibes is doing to Mr. Nas and his blood is accelerating his aging, but the big question is why they are doing so. It looks like Mr. Nas is a very wealthy man, but Constance’s interest surely goes beyond money. Why Is Constance In New York? Image via MovieStillsDB The events of Apocalypse created a new timeline, and one of the most notable changes was Constance’s fate. Before that, Constance had killed herself at Murder House as she could no longer handle more tragedies and raising Michael (Cody Fern), but in the new timeline, Constance never killed herself and carried on with her life after Michael was killed. Now, Constance lived in Los Angeles, first in Murder House and later next door, so the question now is why she’s in New York. The answer is surely linked to whoever and whatever Mr. Nas is, but at least Constance seems to have broken free from Murder House and everything that attached her to that area. How Did Tate & Addie Leave The Murder House? Credit: Eric Liebowitz/FX Despite the confusing events in American Horror Stories, Murder House is still standing, and all its ghosts are still there. This means that Addie (Jamie Brewer) and Tate (Peters) are still there, and as some of the many ghosts in the house, they can’t leave (except on Halloween night). However, on the 13th night after Christmas Day, Tate and Addie returned and joined Constance at Mr. Nas’ apartment, along with Kai, Winter (Billie Lourd), and Elizabeth Short (Mena Suvari). How Tate and Addie were able to leave Murder House and show up in New York with Constance is unknown, though American Horror Story might find a loophole in its own mythology and give them another night when they can leave the house. What Does Ben Have To Do With Everything? As this is American Horror Story, it’s not a coincidence that Ben, a man with a deep fear of the number 13, is the new hospice caregiver of Mr. Nas. Constance even brings up Ben’s miraculous survival and how quickly he reincorporated into his normal life. Ben might be linked to Mr. Nas or Constance’s plans in some way, or he could be of use to either or both, for some reason. Why Are Kai & Winter With The Langdons? Image courtesy of MovieStillsDb As mentioned above, Constance is joined on that specific night by her children Addie and Tate, Elizabeth Short, and siblings Kai and Winter. The latter two come from season 7, Cult, with Kai being a cult leader and Winter one of his followers, but they both die in their season. Now, while it’s explained that the veil is thin on that night, allowing them to cross over, that doesn’t explain why they meet with Constance. There’s no link between the Langdons and the Anderson siblings, so unless Constance specifically summoned them for whatever plans she has, it makes no sense that they casually show up at Mr. Nas’ home. Why Do They Need Elizabeth Short? Another surprise appearance at Constance’s dinner is Elizabeth Short, unfortunately known as The Black Dahlia. Winter arrives at Mr. Nas’ home with Elizabeth, who has no idea what she’s doing there. Constance doesn’t give anything away either, but she treats her like the most special guest of all. At the end of episode 3, Elizabeth, Tate, Addie, Kai, and Winter go to the basement of the building and meet with a group of people wearing capes, led by Wilemina Venable (Paulson). Elizabeth is given a red cape, leaving many questions about why she was summoned, who the people in the basement are, what they want, and why they need Elizabeth. How Is Wilhemina Venable Involved? Image via MovieStillsDB Wilhemina was introduced in Apocalypse, and she was the tyrannical leader of Outpost 3. Wilhemina was killed by Michael Langdon in Apocalypse, but as this was before the timeline reset done by Mallory, it’s understood that she’s alive in the new timeline, as Michael was killed before his rise to power. Thanks to that, the mystery around her appearance in American Horror Story: 13 isn’t how she got there but why she’s there. As mentioned above, she’s seen leading the group of people in the basement, telling Elizabeth that she has arrived at the portal to hell. It could be possible that Wilhemina is once again involved in the end of the world or the presence of the Antichrist, or the show could be going on a different route. How Did Madison Get Out Of Hell? Among the returning characters in American Horror Story: 13 are some of the witches from Coven, including the current Supreme, Cordelia, a new witch named Ophelia (Avantika), and Madison (Roberts). These characters briefly appear at the beginning of the first episode, and one of the biggest questions about that scene is how Madison is back with the coven. Madison was killed in Coven and sent to her personal hell, from which Michael rescued her in Apocalypse. This means that, after the timeline reset and Michael’s death, Madison wasn’t resurrected. However, Mallory did mention she would go back and rescue her at some point, so her return in 13 implies that Mallory kept her word. What's Coming For The Coven? Image via Disney+ In that scene with the witches, Cordelia tells Madison she can feel something bad coming when a storm suddenly opens all the windows. Cordelia says it’s a “harbinger of their doom” and “terrifying, vengeful death.” Cordelia and the coven don’t appear again in the first three episodes of American Horror Story: 13, so it’s unclear what that omen really is, where it comes from, and how they will defend themselves. The biggest question is whether it’s related to Mr. Nas and/or to what Constance is doing with her children, Kai, Winter, and the rest. American Horror Story: 13 left too many questions in its first three episodes and very little direction, but hopefully, everything will be answered soon.
