A London court heard that the incident took place in June, days after the woman had taken cocaine.Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, who is related to Abu Dhabi's ruling family through marriage, pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday. She was sentenced to a two-year community order, which includes a rehabilitation requirement, and ordered to pay a total of 6,114 pounds (over Rs 7 lakh) in fines and costs. The case has drawn attention because of the circumstances in which the child was found, the royal's reported financial allowance and her subsequent admission to a drug treatment facility.According to The Times, Al Nahyan was discovered on June 13, slumped against railings in west London, alongside an unconscious man. The three-year-old child was nearby, barefoot and playing with a scooter close to a road. Members of the public raised the alarm and stayed with the child until emergency services arrived. Al Nahyan was unconscious for around 30 minutes.WHO IS MAHRAH AL NAHYAN?Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, is associated with Abu Dhabi's ruling Al Nahyan family through marriage. The family rules Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The emirate is also the country's capital of political power, with its ruler, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, serving as the UAE's president. The family has long been at the centre of the emirate's leadership and is associated with substantial wealth. At the court hearing, Al Nahyan was reported to receive a monthly allowance of around 8,000 pounds. However, the court proceedings focused not on her royal connections but on her responsibility for the young child and the circumstances that left the toddler unattended on a London street. The prosecution said members of the public noticed the child without shoes and close to moving traffic. They stepped in because of concerns about the toddler's immediate safety.According to local media, Rio Pahlavanpour, prosecuting, told the court that members of the public "noticed the child was unattended, without shoes on the street with a scooter and members of the public intervened as [the child] seemed to be in close proximity to moving traffic".Footage of the incident, obtained by the Crown Prosecution Service, showed Al Nahyan sitting on the pavement with her head slumped against railings outside a property.WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE INCIDENT?The court heard that Al Nahyan had taken cocaine in the days before she was found unconscious. Drug paraphernalia was discovered when she was searched, although no illegal substances were found on her.Her defence lawyer, Stephen Vullo KC, told the court that she had not taken cocaine on the day of the incident. Instead, he said, she was exhausted after using the drug in the preceding days. When Al Nahyan regained consciousness, she reportedly questioned why members of the public were so concerned."This is not a slaughterhouse, why do you care so much? Why are you so worried?" she said, according to the account presented in court. The intervention of bystanders was crucial because the toddler was reportedly close to traffic and could have wandered away while the adults remained unconscious. Judge Jeremy Johnson KC highlighted the potential consequences of leaving a young child in those circumstances."By leaving (the toddler) to play barefoot in the street while under the influence of drugs, you showed a recklessness and disregard for (the child's) safety," the judge said, according to reports of the hearing. The judge also noted that, on one occasion, the child ran towards the road while chasing a piece of paper before a member of the public intervened. He warned that the child could have been seriously injured, become lost or been harmed by a stranger.ROYAL SENT TO DRUG REHABILITATIONFollowing the incident, Al Nahyan entered the Priory clinic in Woking, Surrey, a facility that provides treatment for addiction and other health conditions. Her defence lawyer told the court that she had remained drug-free since entering the facility and was committed to addressing her addiction.Vullo said she had shown "significant remorse and resolve to overcome her addiction".He outlined her plans to complete a three-month treatment programme before moving to the Guildford area, where she intends to continue treatment as a day patient and attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings. The court imposed a two-year community order requiring Al Nahyan to undergo rehabilitation. She was also ordered to pay 6,114 pounds in fines and costs.- Ends
