Where Twin Peaks’ Kyle MacLachlan Stands With Laura Dern After Breakup

Laura Dern Joins ‘White Lotus’ Season 4 After Helena Bonham Carter's ExitThrough the years, Kyle MacLachlan's bond with Laura Dern has had its peaks and valleys. The actor reflected on how he ended his four-year romance with the Jurassic Park alum during the late '80s to date his Twin Peaks costar Lara Flynn Boyle, admitting that it was "not my best moment." “She is sexy and edgy, a tough girl from Chicago, the antithesis of anyone I’ve ever been with,” MacLachlan said of Boyle in a People interview published Sept. 21. "I was away on location [in the Pacific Northwest] and feeling, 'This is my town, let me show you some of the cool spots.'" "We fell into this relationship, and it just destroyed the relationship with Laura," the 67-year-old continued. "I did not handle that well, especially for Laura." However, MacLachlan noted that he and Dern, 59, have now "healed." In fact, the exes even costarred in Twin Peaks' 2017 revival, making it the second time they had collaborated onscreen since 1986's Blue Velvet.“When [series creator David Lynch] told me that he was casting her as Diane in that, I was like, ‘That is the most brilliant thing you could have ever said to me,’” MacLachlan shared during a 2024 appearance on the Dinner's on Me podcast. "I was so excited to get to work with her."Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images; Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection via Getty ImagesPraising Dern for being "very understanding" of their split, the Fallout star continued, "We're great friends now, and I just adore her." "She’s got the best sense of humor," MacLachlan added. "She is smart, beautiful, empathic." MacLachlan dated Boyle, now 56, for three years following his breakup with Dern. He and the Practice alum called it quits in 1992, with MacLachlan going on to marry his now-wife Desiree Gruber in 2002.Paul Butterfield/FilmMagicMeanwhile, Dern dated Billy Bob Thornton from 1997 to 1999, when she unexpectedly found out he had married his Pushing Tin costar Angelina Jolie. "I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I've never heard from him again," she recalled in a 2000 interview with Talk magazine. "It's like a sudden death. For no one has there been any closure or clarity." In 2005, the Big Little Lies star married musician Ben Harper, with whom she shares kids Ellery, 25, and Jaya, 21.
