Phantom Blade Zero doesn't follow the RPG trend of having weapons in different tiers that you replace with newer ones. Instead, it lets you upgrade the weapons you're using to match the difficulty of the locations you're in. With this system, you can keep using the same weapon throughout the game if you'd like and just keep upgrading it to stay effective. However, to upgrade these weapons, you'll need resources specific to the weapon type, similar to how you choose your skills. This means you can upgrade different weapon types, but because each type has finite resources, you need to choose which weapons go best together. How To Upgrade Weapons To upgrade your weapons in Phantom Blade Zero, you'll need to use the bells you use to upgrade abilities and fast travel around the map. At the bell, select Upgrade Equipment to open your inventory and choose what you want to improve. Hold the prompted button (X on PS5) to upgrade the weapon you choose. From this menu, you can choose from your Main Weapons, Phantom Edges and Accessories, and they all get upgraded similarly. Choose the item you want to upgrade, and it will show you what resources you need. Although the resources differ, they all require Remnant Dust, just like upgrading your abilities. For regular weapons, there are three different weapon types to choose from: One-Handed, Two-Handed and Dual-Wield. To upgrade these, you'll need Forged Metal, Twinned Metal and Broadplate Metal, respectively. You'll also need Solvent, which applies to any weapon you're upgrading. However, as you level your weapons higher, you'll need to improve the materials, too. For example, for one-handed weapons, you can use Forged Metal to upgrade up to level 10, but you need Polished Forged Metal to upgrade from level 10 to level 20. Furthermore, you'll need Flawless Forged Metal to upgrade beyond level 20 to max level. The same applies to the solvent you use to upgrade weapons. Solvent is used for upgrading weapons up to level 10, Concentrated Solvent gets you from level 10 to level 20 and Universal Solvent gets you the rest of the way to max level. How To Upgrade Phantom Edges Upgrading Phantom Edges functions the same as upgrading weapons, but requires different materials. Just like how weapons have three different types - One-Handed, Two-Handed and Dual-Wield - there are five different types of Phantom Edges: Martial, Destruction, Artifice, Ranged, and Summon. The materials required for upgrading Phantom Edges are as follows. Phantom Edge Type Level 1-10 Resource Level 11-20 Resource Level 20-Max Resources Martial Exotic Copper Ingot Otherworldly Copper Forged Otherworldly Copper Destruction Darkfire Charcoal Blazing Darkfire Charcoal Searing Darkfire Charcoal Artifice Mechanical Gear Precision Mechanical Gear Ying Mechanical Gear Ranged Ancient Timber Camphor Timber Forbidden Camphor Timber Summon Incense Ash Illusory Incense Ash Incense Ash For The Lady How To Revert Weapons Reverting weapons is one of the game's best features because it lets you freely try different weapons as you play. If you revert an upgraded weapon, it returns to level 1 and refunds all resources used to upgrade it. This means you aren't penalized for experimenting with different weapons. However, this does get more complicated as you upgrade weapons to higher levels. For levels 1-10, reverting weapons is free, but for higher levels, you have to use a Reforge Talisman. Reforge Talismans are available for both weapons and Phantom Edges, and they are not refunded after you revert levels. This means you need to be more thoughtful about which weapons you upgrade and revert once you reach higher levels. Luckily, by the end of the game, you'll already know which weapons work best for your play style, so you won't need to revert as much. How To Upgrade Accessories Upgrading Accessories is a similar process to upgrading weapons and Phantom Edges. Go to a bell and select Upgrade Equipment, then go to the Accessories tab at the top of the menu. To upgrade Accessories, you need only one resource along with your Remnant Dust: Tainted Crystal Shards. You can find these around the world like the rest of the in-game resources, but you can not revert accessories like you can with weapons and Phantom Edges. Once you use them, you can't get Tainted Crystal Shards back. How To Soul Temper Soul Tempering is the highest level of upgrading that you can do in Phantom Blade Zero. To do so, you need to find materials throughout the game that are specific to each weapon or Phantom Edge. You unlock Soul Tempering only after you've spoken to Myst at the Order's tavern in Pangzhen. To Soul Temper a weapon or Phantom Edge, you have to be in the upgrade menu. At the bottom left, a prompt will appear to open the Soul Tempering menu. When you press it, it pulls up the list of weapons or Phantom Edges you have and lets you Soul Temper them if you have the right resources. You can find Soul Temper materials in various places, such as chests or by defeating bosses. You only need one of each material to Soul Temper a given item, and you can't revert the upgrade or do it more than once.
