While computer parts have been getting more expensive for some time, the official Xbox account on X just announced a brand-new buildable brick set of their original gaming console, which costs even more than it would to buy a playable one at launch for yourself. Featuring Easter eggs in the form of miniature dioramas for some of the original Xbox's most iconic games like Halo, Morrowind, and Psychonauts, the buildable 1:1 scale console is being produced by Mattel themselves, rather than LEGO or even Megablocks. Even though it doesn't have the same name-brand appeal as LEGO, Mattel does offer a few unique features that set it apart from the competition. Using the buildable controller connected to the Xbox itself, each of the XYBA buttons will correspond with a unique electronic light and sound sequence for each of the 3 dioramas and the console itself. Speaking of the insertable dioramas, all of them include 1-inch NanoWorld figures of iconic characters from Master Chief to Dagoth Ur, which can even be taken out and displayed separately if you want. Although it's hard to deny that Mattel's buildable Xbox is an excellently creative collector's item, even with its staggering price tag, the announcement does come at an unfortunate time considering Xbox's recent layoffs. While the console had likely been in production for quite some time already before the announcement, Xbox only recently laid off the team behind the original Psychonauts, Double Fine Productions, with the included diorama being a painful reminder of the studio's heartbreaking loss of talent. Even with the disappointing timing, the buildable console is still a unique time capsule of simpler times for the gaming studio, with each of the dioramas being a detailed tribute to some of the original Xbox's most classic releases.
