Death of the Pastor's Wife follows the life of Mica Miller, a charismatic young woman who grew up singing in the church, but whose life took a turn when she married the local pastor."When [Mica] was 13, she met John-Paul Miller, the pastor of Solid Rock Church, where her family began attending services," a Netflix synopsis for Death of the Pastor's Wife reads. "Across three episodes, the series traces the arc of their relationship through text messages, home video, church footage, and Mica's own journals, alongside firsthand accounts from the siblings and friends who witnessed it unfold."The synopsis continues: "When Mica was found dead in 2024 at age 30—in a case officially ruled a suicide—those closest to her were left with many unanswered questions, and the series follows their search for clarity into the present day."What happened to Mica Miller?Mica Miller, who spent her childhood in Wichita, Kansas, moved with her family to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as a teenager. There, she became an active member of the local church community and even became a worship leader. Beyond her vibrant personality and dedication to her faith, Mica was celebrated for her incredible singing voice.NetflixAt thirteen, she met John-Paul Miller, the pastor at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach. Like Mica, John-Paul—or, as he was known to those closest to him, JP—was a gifted musician, and his unconventional preaching style attracted a devoted congregation to his church. At the age of 18, Mica went to work as the pastor's assistant.Although he had recently officiated the ceremony for Mica's first marriage, according to accounts from Mica's friends and family, JP—who was also married at the time—tested the boundaries of her relationship. Within a few years, both were divorced and, as the documentary explains, "courting on JP's terms."Per Mica's sister, Sierra, who features in the documentary, JP displayed concerning behavior from the outset. Mica got JP's handwritten signature tattooed on her, something Sierra described as a mark of "ownership." Another friend in the series said, "I think he used the Bible over her."Mica eventually married JP, who was 15 years her senior, becoming a stepmother to his four children. But as the years went by, JP's alleged behavior—and, as the documentary points out, dominance over Mica's faith, body, and money—worsened. Mica decided to leave the marriage but for a long time struggled to get away from JP, who supposedly began stalking her. As viewers see in the documentary, he allegedly planted tracking devices on her car, slashed her tires, flooded her phone with unwanted calls and texts, and even posted a nude photo of Mica to Facebook without her consent.After years of this treatment, Mica retained a lawyer and filed for divorce. "Since the day we became husband and wife, I have been abused in every way I can think of – emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically," she wrote in a handwritten affidavit that accompanied her filing, per Netflix. JP was served divorce papers, but two days later, on April 27, 2024, Mica was found dead.NetflixWhere is John-Paul Miller now?On May 7, 2024, just a few days after Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park, her passing was ruled a suicide, and the investigation into her death was closed. JP supported this conclusion, even announcing her death as a suicide from the pulpit at his church.Despite that, Mica's friends and family pushed for investigators to look deeper into the case and wondered: While JP seemingly did not kill his wife, could his treatment of her have pushed her to the edge? Ultimately, that is what a trial will find out, as in December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted JP on two counts.The first charge, cyberstalking, alleges that Mica was the victim of a pattern of harassment from JP from November 2022 until her death. This includes the tracking of her car, relentless phone contact, the nude photo, and more. The second charge JP is facing is making false statements, as it is alleged he lied to federal investigators. He pleaded not guilty and, notably, has not been charged in connection with Mica's death, according to Netflix. As of August 2026, when Death of the Pastor's Wife was released on Netflix, JP's trial is scheduled to begin in October 2026.NetflixJP hasn’t let the circumstances surrounding Mica's death—or his upcoming trial—stop him from moving on. In June 2025, he got remarried to Suzie Skinner. The pair, according to accounts of those interviewed in the Netflix series, now preach to a congregation of 15 to 20 people at pop-up locations around Myrtle Beach following the sale of the building and grounds of Solid Rock Church.JP declined to comment on Netflix's series.
