He hails from Massachusetts, but where does Steve Carell live now? The star and his wife, fellow actor and comedian Nancy Walls Carell, have long maintained a base on the West Coast, but they have deep roots in their home state as well. In addition to owning a Massachusetts summer home, they have owned a Colonial general store in the Bay State since 2009. In a 2011 interview with The Patriot Ledger, Carell explained the retail property’s significance: “The main impetus to keep it going is that not many of those places exist and I wanted this one to stay afloat,” he said. “Just generally speaking, there are not that many local sort of communal places as there used to be. So much interaction has now become over the internet that I think it’s nice for people to actually go and talk and have a cup of coffee and communicate with one another. It sounds very old school, but it is important to me.”Though not much has been reported about Carell’s real estate transactions, he apparently relishes in home ownership. “I could spend hours mulching leaves,” he said in a recent interview. “I get very excited about something like buying a new leaf blower. I actually just went one step further and bought a leaf vacuum that straps over my back, and I love it.”Below, we’re laying out what we know about the actor’s homes.Studio City homeSteve Carrell photographed at his Studio City home in 2005. Photo: Robert Gauthier/Getty ImagesCarrel’s earliest reported property was a relatively modest four-bedroom, four-bathroom home in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles. The actor was a correspondent on The Daily Show in 2003 when he built the 3,700-square-foot dwelling. The two-story house reportedly featured a balcony, a tree-shaded yard, and a gray-green façade with white trim. Carrel sold the home in 2007 for $1.5 million.Marshfield residenceThe Rooster star had a banner year in 2005. He not only had dual breakout roles in The 40-Year-Old Virgin and The Office, but also added a piece of real estate to his portfolio: a summer home in he and his wife’s home state of Massachusetts. The couple bought a home in Marshfield, a coastal town where Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler also resides. They reportedly spent $790,000 on the four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom abode. While not much else is known about the home, the Crazy, Stupid, Love star has sung the town’s praises. “It’s a lovely town. I love being there. It’s a great place to come back to. My family loves it. It’s a second home for my kids. I feel like it’s home,” Carell said in 2011. “It’s very different from LA. It’s the atmosphere that my wife and I both grew up with. And it’s something we want to share with our kids. We want them to be with all of their cousins, aunts and uncles, and grandparents,” Carell said. “It’s family. It’s coming back to the family and I think that’s important.”Four years after buying the home in Marshfield, Carell paid $575,000 for the town’s 156-year-old general store. It was a nostalgic purchase for the actor, who frequently visited a general store about an hour away as a child. “I have always had such fond memories of that store,” Carell told Boston Magazine in 2009. “Sadly, while I was still a boy, [the owner] passed away and the store closed. The town lost something, and so did our family.” That bittersweet memory informed his decision to snap up the Colonial-style Marshfield Hills General Store when it went up for sale. “The place is a Marshfield landmark,” he told the outlet. “A needed gathering spot. A real sense of community lives here. My wife and I thought that preserving such a place was important.”Carell still maintains these properties.Toluca Lake propertiesIn 2007 the Los Angeles Times reported that Carell and his wife bought a $6.5 million house on Toluca Lake in Los Angeles, around the same time that they offloaded their Studio City home. The pad reportedly has five bedrooms and six bathrooms across about 6,700 square feet.Carell bought another nearby Toluca Lake home for $6 million in 2010, according to archives from journalist Mark David’s famed but now-defunct blog The Real Estalker. At the time, the traditional-style house spanned a little over 5,100 square feet and had six bedrooms and five bathrooms. Privately tucked behind double gates, the 1.27-acre property also hosted a sizable motor court, a swimming pool, a pool house, and a tennis court.Ultimately Carell and his wife opted to raze the house in favor of a Cape Cod–style custom build, which was completed in 2013. At the time the two-story home reportedly had a 5000-square-foot basement with a home theater and a rec room accessible via elevator. The first floor, which alone spans over 7,000 square feet, hosted a guest suite, a study, a living room, a dining room, and a den with access to a porch, while the kitchen featured a butler’s pantry and an adjacent breakfast room. The upper level had three bedrooms and a children’s playroom (the couple’s two children have since left the nest). Like its original iteration, the property’s grounds host a tennis court, pool, spa, and cabana, plus a guesthouse and a garage with an automobile elevator. It is unclear if the Despicable Me actor still owns his first home in the area, but he seemingly still maintains his upgraded Cape Cod–style mansion.
