(Photo: AP) Keep in mind that there are currently roughly 15,000 satellites in orbit, according to the study.The problem is not simply that satellites are visible in the night sky but also an obstructed view. “Each of these satellites, when it crosses a telescope's field of view, leaves a bright line,” ESO astronomer Olivier Hainaut, who led the study, told news agency Reuters. (Photo: Astroscale) THOUSANDS OF SATELLITED COULD PHOTOBOMB IMAGESThe researchers used simulations based on observations from ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile's Atacama Desert, home to the Very Large Telescope. "Each streak wipes away a small part of a telescope's view of space."The severity depends on both the number and brightness of satellites.Hainaut elaborated that 1,00,000 satellites would represent a level of interference that is “bearable”, but at 3,00,000, some telescopes could lose most of their data.ESO's own simulations found that a large SpaceX constellation could produce dozens of trails in individual images taken two hours into the night, potentially causing field-of-view losses of up to 28% for the Very Large Telescope's FORS2 instrument.NOT JUST AN ASTRONOMICAL PROBLEMAstronomers use ground-based telescopes to study everything from distant galaxies and exploding stars to planets around other stars and potentially hazardous asteroids.Satellite streaks can therefore mean losing pieces of observations that may be impossible to repeat.The problem is also not just confined to individual streaks.
