Where are the cast of Trainspotting 30 years on? From Star Wars fame to blood soaked A-list wedding & BAFTA wins

ITS gritty portrayal of heroin addicts put British cinema on the map and became an instant cult classic. And when Trainspotting’s squalid depiction of drug culture and vicious crime appeared in 1996, it instantly catapulted its little-known cast to superstardom. The tale of Renton, Spud, Begbie and Sick Boy had a hugely successful soundtrack, with Ewan McGregor‘s ‘Choose Life’ monologue played over Iggy Pop’s hit Lust For Life. His near-fatal overdose in the film played out to Lou Reed’s Perfect Day, and the song became synonymous with the film. Underworld became household names thanks to Trainspotting’s use of Born Slippy, but the cast were the ones who really cashed in on the box office smash. The British Film Institute ranked it the 20th century’s tenth best UK film. And the director Danny Boyle went on to helm the London Olympic launch in 2012 as well as hits such as 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire. The brutal story was reprised for a sequel called T2 in 2017, reuniting the original cast in middle age. Most read in Fabulous Thirty years on from the original film, as it’s reimagined as a musical in the West End, we take a look at where the cast are now. Ewan McGregor – Renton The Scottish star, now 55, is best known to younger audiences for playing Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the phenomenally successful Star Wars franchise. But he was virtually unknown when he agreed to lose two stone and shave his head to play the leading role in the adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s hard-hitting novel. The father of four has since starred in a string of blockbusters including Moulin Rouge and Black Hawk Down, as well as his motorcycle travel documentary series Long Way Round, Long Way Down and Long Way Up. He is now with his second wife, American actress Mary Winstead, having split from his wife of more than 20 years, Eve Mavrakis, in 2017. He headed out to Hollywood to star in a string of major movies, including Hackers, where he fell for his future wife Angelina Jolie. Just six months later they tied the knot in a bizarre ceremony – the actress wore black rubber trousers and a T-shirt with Miller’s name written across it in her own blood. She said at the time: “It’s your husband. You’re about to marry him… You can sacrifice a little to make it really special.” But it wasn’t to last and the pair separated three years later, although they remained close and there were rumours of a reunion in 2021. As well as starring in major movies including Mansfield Park, Dark Shadows alongside Johnny Depp, and Byzantium, he is best known for starring as Sherlock Holmes in the hit TV crime drama Elementary, which ran for seven successful series between 2012 and 2019. Kelly Macdonald – Diane She went from her appearance as innocent schoolgirl Diane Coulston to landing leading parts in Nanny McPhee, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Finding Neverland and The Girl in the Cafe, for which she won an Emmy Award. Kelly was also nominated for a BAFTA after starring in No Country for Old Men and scooped another Emmy Award nomination for her performance in HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Robert Carlyle – Begbie Robert, 61, was the only established TV star in the original cast, having had his big break in 1994 in an episode of Cracker opposite Robbie Coltrane. But after Trainspotting he was in huge demand on the big screen too and took the lead in 1997 smash The Full Monty, as well as James Bond hit The World Is Not Enough.
