This means teams could be forced to play with 10 players for several minutes. Middlesbrough striker Will Lankshear was the first player to break the new time-wasting rule. The former Tottenham man netted the only goal of Boro’s 1-0 win over Wrexham in the Carabao Cup at the start of August. But he then fell foul of a recently-imposed regulation designed to crack down on players taking an age to come off when substituted.
