‘When A Witness Recants’ To Premiere On HBO Soon, Dawn Porter’s Documentary On Shocking Wrongful Conviction Case

EXCLUSIVE: HBO has set a November 17 premiere date for When a Witness Recants, director Dawn Porter’s searing film about the toll of the longest combined wrongful conviction case in U.S. history. The documentary executive produced by award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates will also be available to stream on HBO Max. It examines a gross miscarriage of justice that saw three teenage boys in Baltimore convicted of a murder they didn’t commit and sent to prison for life. Lauren Lipscomb, chief of the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Division, who helped win freedom for the three after they spent 36 years in prison, calls it “the most egregious wrongful conviction case in my career.” When a Witness Recants premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and won the Audience Award at the recent Mill Valley Film Festival in Northern California. Watch on Deadline HBO Documentary Films “In 1983, a 14-year-old boy was murdered in the hallway of Harlem Park Junior High School in Baltimore, Maryland,” states a synopsis. “Three local teenagers were swiftly arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life in maximum security prisons. The truth is that they were all innocent. When a Witness Recants explores the collateral damage the handling of the case had on the close-knit community, the decades-long aftereffects on the wrongfully accused, and on the witnesses who decades later recanted their testimony and explained that they had been pressured as teenagers to give false testimony at trial, betraying the three accused.” The synopsis continues, “Rediscovering the story as an adult, acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates, who grew up in the same West Baltimore community, learns the truth about the case and comes to see it as both a crucial turning point for Baltimore’s tight knit Black community and a glaring example of a broader national crisis of racially charged police misconduct. Using animated sequences, insight from the major players, and footage from depositions taken in 2022, the film details how coerced confessions and false testimony led to the convictions, revealing an egregious abuse of authority and prosecutorial malfeasance.” An animated sequence in ‘When a Witness Recants’ HBO Documentary Films When a Witness Recants is adapted from a New Yorker article by Jennifer Gonnerman. The film includes a riveting scene where the exonerated men — Ransom Watkins, Andrew Stewart, and Alfred Chestnut – meet face-to-face with a man who recanted his testimony that had helped convict the trio decades earlier. “With raw emotion,” the synopsis notes, “the four men, now in their 50s and all survivors of a flawed criminal justice system, tell their stories as they seek to rebuild their lives in the wake of lost time.” HBO Documentary Films presents When a Witness Recants, a Maceo-Lyn Production in association with Trilogy Films and Sony Pictures Television-Nonfiction. The film is directed by Dawn Porter and produced by Porter, Jennifer Oko, and Miriam Weintraub. Executive producers are Ta-Nehisi Coates, Kenyatta Matthews, Kamilah Forbes, Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, and Jennifer Gonnerman. For HBO, executive producers are Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez. “The documentary puts a period on a part of my life I would like to forget, but it gives me a platform to maybe help other people as well,” Andrew Stewart said during a Q&A after a screening of the film at DC/DOX in June. “This documentary, I want this to highlight the better part of my life — coming home at 53, finding the love of my life and being happy.” “Every time we look at [the film], it’s a reminder and it’s emotional for all three of us,” Alfred Chestnut said. “I don’t take nothing for granted — all my blessings. You see my daughter on the film, and I got another one on the way. I’m just looking forward to all the things that’s coming that God has for all three of us.” (L-R) Alfred Chestnut, director Dawn Porter, Andrew Stewart, and Ransom Watkins attend the ‘When A Witness Recants’ premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2026 in Park City, Utah. She also served as an EP on HBO’s Eyes on the Prize III: We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest. At the DC/DOX Q&A, she said, “It’s hard to understand how people who are innocent get convicted. And I’m very sad to say I have seen this too many times and it never stops shocking me and enraging me… We should not be a society that wrongfully puts children in prison for the rest of their lives ever, but certainly not for something they didn’t do.” Watch the trailer for When a Witness Recants here:
