What's behind Bethlehem Kudumba Unit's Rs 325-crore success? Fahadh Faasil explains

Actor and co-producer of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, Fahadh Faasil, thinks the answer to the film's runaway success is fairly simple: good, fresh content will always find an audience. He also believes the film got several other things just right – from its age-gap romance and humour to Girish AD's honest script and, perhaps crucially, a release during the Onam holidays.A month into its theatrical run, that combination is still paying off, with Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju's romantic comedy now at Rs 321.42 crore worldwide and closing in on the Rs 325-crore mark, as reported by Sacnilk.Fahadh, who produced the film with Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran under Bhavana Studios, spoke about its success in an interview with Variety India. For him, much of the credit belongs to the people who made the film what it is.“All credit goes to the entire team, especially director Girish AD and Nivin Pauly,” he said, adding, “What a wonderful, honest script – the age-gap romance, the packaging, the humour, everything landed perfectly. And we got the perfect release date during the Onam holidays.” Bethlehem Kudumba Unit smashing box office recordsAnd the numbers suggest audiences have indeed found plenty to like. Even after 31 days in cinemas, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is refusing to behave like a film that's already had its big moment.According to industry tracking website Sacnilk, it earned Rs 2.65 crore nett in India on September 20, taking its domestic total to Rs 157.78 crore. The Malayalam version contributed Rs 2.25 crore, while the Telugu and Tamil versions added Rs 21 lakh and Rs 19 lakh respectively. Worldwide, the film has now reached Rs 321.42 crore gross. That puts it within touching distance of the Rs 325-crore mark – and also brings it close to the lifetime collection of Vijay's Jana Nayagan, which ended its run at Rs 324.59 crore. What's perhaps more interesting is the way Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is getting there. The film is still managing more than Rs 1 crore on weekdays, well into its fourth week, while the Malayalam version continues to draw crowds. Even the night shows held a healthy 50 per cent occupancy.Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has already become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, while its run is showing little sign of running out of steam.Directed by Girish AD, the film stars Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, with Sangeeth Prathap, Suresh Krishna, Vinay Forrt, Roshan Shanavas and Shyam Mohan in key roles.
