What should you look out for this Premiership midweek?

Image source, SNSImage caption, Martin O'Neill, Derek McInnes, Stephen Robinson and Neil McCann are among managers under scrutinyByClive LindsayBBC Sport ScotlandOnly a handful of games into the Scottish Premiership season and it could be argued that about half its team managers are already looking nervously over their shoulders.At least most do not have to deal with a transfer deadline day before preparing for this midweek's fixtures as the domestic deadline has been delayed until the dust had settled on the five games scheduled for Wednesday evening.However, while they have another chance to assess their reshaped squads before another hasty round of phone calls and negotiations before the transfer window closes at 17:00 BST on Thursday, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian have no such luxury as they meet later that evening.So what should we look out for in that big game - and the five others on Wednesday?Celtic v AberdeenAt the start of the campaign you would have imagined there would be no question marks about Martin O'Neill's position after he rescued a league and couple double out of a traumatic season in his second spell as Celtic's interim manager.However, the veteran Northern Irishman missed last month's win over Kilmarnock after "a small medical procedure" in hospital then endured a 5-1 thrashing by LASK that meant Celtic again missed out on the riches of the Champions League.Saturday's subsequent 2-1 home win over Falkirk was hardly convincing, adding to the doubts some supporters once again have voiced about their summer transfer dealings, and assistant Shaun Maloney was sent out to meet the media instead on Tuesday.Neverthless, they have won all five of their games apart from that collapse in Austria and go into Wednesday's meeting with Aberdeen already two points clear at the top of the table.Similarly, counterpart Stephen Robinson has still to convince some Dons fans despite steering them clear of relegation trouble last season then starting the season with six wins and just two losses.To make matters worse, after Sunday's home defeat by Rangers, few will be expecting much from a trip to Celtic Park, where they have not won in 14 visits.Indeed, Celtic won all three meetings last season after Aberdeen, who have not won in 15 away league games, edged the 2025 Scottish Cup final on penalties.Dundee v St JohnstoneSteven Pressley was not a popular choice as Dundee head coach last season, but his subsequent charm offensive means he will be forgiven quickly for a defeat by Hibernian on Sunday that ended their six-game winning run at Dens Park.Having admitted he failed to "find the right solutions" to thwart the Leith side, Pressley now must work out how to beat St Johnstone for the first time as a manager, having lost all three meetings with the Perth side when Falkirk manager in season 2009-10.However, other statistics are in his favour, with St Johnstone having only won one of their latest 10 meetings and Simo Valakari's side having lost three in a row on the road after Saturday's loss to Hearts and winning just one of their latest five outings overall.Kilmarnock v St MirrenGiven Saturday's 4-0 home drubbing by Dundee United, it is hard to argue that Neil McCann is not the manager most under pressure.That came after a 5-1 thrashing by Celtic in their last home league game.A 3-2 Ayrshire derby win over second-tier Ayr United came in between that, but that is their only victory in five outings.McCann will take heart from two wins over St Mirren since taking charge in January, a 4-3 victory at Rugby Park in February then a 3-0 success in Paisley in May.It leaves Kilmarnock unbeaten in four meetings with the Buddies since losing on penalties in League Cup last September after 2-2 draw in Ayrshire.Craig McLeish's side arrive having been held to a 3-3 draw by Motherwell on Sunday after a 5-1 hammering by Rangers in the League Cup.However, until then, St Mirren had been unbeaten in five away from home, winning the latest three without conceding a goal, and will be out to prove the Ibrox capitulation was a mere blip.Motherwell v Dundee UnitedFigure caption, Lee Sharp confirms Jim Goodwin is home and recoveringHaving continued the swashbuckling style imposed successfully by Jens Berthel Askou last season, Motherwell's Alfred Johansson is probably the manager least under scrutiny.Yet the Swede's side are without a win in four after Sunday's draw with St Mirren and are also four trips away from home without a win, albeit two of those were in Conference League qualifying against HJK Helsinki and Freiburg.Indeed, they have lost 10 goals in their latest three outings and, including the end of last season under his predecessor, they have gone five home league games without a win.Jim Goodwin will have had a wry smile from his hospital bed considering his United side had gone three games without scoring before crushing Kilmarnock on Saturday to end run of four without a win and three straight defeats in his absence.They also failed to score in two defeats and one draw with Well last season, losing 2-0 twice at Fir Park - and have lost all five visits since a win in April 2023.Goodwin will hope they can alter that trend too under assistant Sharp on Wednesday.Falkirk v RangersRangers have only lost one of their latest five outings, but amid those results they failed to qualify for either the Europa League or the Conference League.So Sunday's win over Aberdeen, albeit it narrow, has eased some of the pressure building early into Derek McInnes' Rangers reign.It will be lumped back on again should they fail to beat Falkirk considering John McGlynn's side are without a win in three and have lost four of their past five at home, including their latest three in the league.Included among those are a 5-2 hammering by Rangers on the final weekend of last season, a near repeat of the 6-3 scoreline on their previous visit, leaving the Ibrox side unbeaten in six meetings since Falkirk won 3-2 in Championship in March 2016.Expect plenty of goals again?Hibernian v Heart of Midlothian (Thu)Both capital clubs impressed in Conference League play-offs on Thursday, albeit Hibs ultimately lost out to two late goals at home to Gent.David Gray's side bounced back with a 2-1 win away to Dundee that means they have suffered just one defeat in their latest seven outings.Hearts followed up their European heroics against Rapid Vienna by holding off a spirited St Johnstone comeback on Sunday and are now unbeaten in six since a 6-1 thrashing by Benfica completed an opening four defeats under new head coach Wouter Vrancken.A 2-1 derby victory against nine men at Easter Road in April is, nevertheless, Hearts' only win in eight league games on the road.Should they win a third derby in a row, they will have consigned Hibs to five straight home league defeats for the first time since 2010. Some incentive!Players to watchImage source, Getty Images/SNSImage caption, Oliver Sorensen, Lyall Cameron, Dylan Levitt and Joe Wright could make their debutsCeltic could introduce their latest signing, Oliver Sorensen on loan from Parma, but he will surely not replace Benjamin Nygren in midfield considering the Swede scored in all three of their games against Aberdeen last season.Two Scottish midfielders who have not quite lived up to their early promise could get their chance to revive their careers in opposition at Fir Park.Former Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron, whose family are United fans, could make his debut for the Tannadice side on loan from Rangers.Meanwhile, Dylan Levitt will be keen to face his former club after his arrival from Leyton Orient.United will also have to keep on eye on Tawanda Maswanhise, with last season's top scorer getting off the mark on Sunday and having already scored five times in six Premiership appearances against the Tannadice side, including three in his last two at Fir Park.Former Kilmarnock defender Joe Wright could face St Johnstone after his move from Bradford City to Dundee, who might also complete the signing of Manchester United midfielder Jack Moorhouse in time to play.Meanwhile, St Johnstone are hoping to gain permission to play former Fortuna Dusseldorf midfielder Danny Schmidt.
