How many years have you lived in New York City? I was born in Brooklyn and then we moved to New Jersey when I was 6. Then I came back when I was 18, and it’s been off and on since then. You could make one subway etiquette rule law. What would it be? Just get up for the pregnant ladies. Your cab driver is taking a horrible route. Do you interrupt? Yes. I mean, you keep it polite. I think you begin with a question: “Why are we going this way?” Sometimes there is a legitimate reason. Just work it out together, and hopefully, you’re friends by the end. It’s a blinking red light, and you’re about to cross. Do you wait till it says walk, or are you crossing? That’s one of the upsides of living here — you can’t do it in other places. You get weird looks, and sometimes you get a ticket. You have family coming to town, but they only give you 24 hours’ notice. What do you do with them? If you can get last-minute tickets, I would take them to see “Air,” by Kenzo. Great way to see the city and think about the city in a different way. Would you rather transfer trains or walk farther? Walk farther. Get above ground. Someone tells you the rats are actually cute. What’s your honest response? I think it depends on proximity. If you’re very close to them, they’re maybe not so Pixar. However, maybe 50 feet, you’re just like, Aw, I am in New York. Have you ever actually been to Staten Island? Yes. It’s not a regular occurrence. Do you call it “the city” or just “Manhattan”? I call it “the city” unless I know that I’m speaking to someone from a different borough and then I call it “Manhattan.” Do you have a New York area code? I used to have a 646. Do you think they still matter? I think there are too many other things that matter. But it was fun when it mattered. What’s the longest you’ve ever waited on a subway platform? Probably 45 minutes. Bedbugs or roaches? Roaches. I mean, I have them. I just saw one not too long ago. Have you ever taken a piece of furniture off the street? Yes. It was a great table. It was my first apartment. I had an inflatable mattress and a TV, and I didn’t have anything to put the TV on. And I was just walking down the street and I just saw this completely adorable little table. And it was my table for about ten years. What was your first apartment in New York like? It was a 350-square-foot walk-up, a sublet. But the best part was it had a fire escape. I would just go out there and get drunk and smoke cigarettes with my friends. And I literally didn’t think life could get better. How many times have you moved in NYC? Oh, a lot. Upwards of eight but most likely, like, 15. What is something a tourist does that you secretly still do? Cheese out every single time I see the skyline. What’s your go-to public bathroom? Trick question. The answer is New York. Do you own a car? I do, but I don’t have a license. I don’t drive it. It’s my husband’s. It expired ten years ago. What is your best NYC celeb sighting? Faith Prince, who was Miss Adelaide in the ’90s production of Guys and Dolls. I was, like, 7 or 8. My mom and I were walking, and Faith Prince was walking towards us, and I recognized her. I think I just started vibrating. I didn’t say anything, and my mom saw her, too, and we just watched her pass. And then we turned to each other and held hands and jumped up and down. You’re old enough to remember when … The Keith Haring mural was on Bowery and they painted over it.
