Karnataka has travellers hooked on a little treasure hunt, and they're willing to lose sleep over it. Scroll down, this one comes with a twist.Karnataka's viral philately passport (Photo: Karnataka Postal Circle/Instagram)New Delhi,Oct 13, 2026 10:50 ISTSomething different happened this weekend in Bengaluru and three other cities in Karnataka. People got up as early as 2 am. Or maybe they never slept. No, there was no kachori or bakery run, no festival, no special iPhone 18 sale. It was all for a passport, a philately passport. It’s a travel keepsake booklet for collecting special postmarks at designated post offices near heritage sites and tourist spots. If you’re a travel enthusiast, chances are you already know about this passport that doesn’t let you plan international trips but definitely lets you explore Karnataka a little (read: a lot) more, and in a very treasure-hunt kind of way. It also went viral in July. We’ll come to that.First, a quick introduction to philatelyIt’s the hobby of collecting and studying postage stamps, along with postal history, designs and the stories behind them. The Karnataka Postal Circle (KPC) launched its Philately Passport initiative in 2024. The booklet allows travellers to collect Permanent Pictorial Cancellations, or PPCs: special illustrated postmarks associated with particular places. A monument, museum or wildlife destination can have its own pictorial cancellation at a designated post office nearby. Collecting these impressions gradually turns the booklet into your personal travelogue. How does it work? Buy the booklet, look through its listed destinations and start planning your route. At each stop, visit the designated post office offering the relevant PPC and have the impression added to your passport. You could work a postal stop into an existing holiday or let the collection inspire the entire trip. Either way, the itinerary has a little mission attached. The passport helps you curate a bucket list of about 100 places across the state. So, you find the spot, get your stamp and check it off the list! Philately passport (Photo: namratha.traveller/Instagram) Fun, right? All about the viral saleThe weekend’s most sought-after travel accessory had just four sale spots: Bengaluru General Post Office (GPO) near Cubbon Park and the philately bureaus in Mysuru, Mangaluru and Belagavi. The KPC held the sale on October 10 and 11, 2026, with each booklet priced at Rs 600. The rule was simple: first come, first served. And each location had a limited stash. Also, one booklet per person was allowed. On Saturday, Mysuru, Belagavi and Mangaluru had about 500 passports each, while Bengaluru had 1,500. Sunday brought a bigger batch: 2,000 in Bengaluru and 1,500 at each of the other three locations. That was considerably more than the previous sale. But clearly, so was the enthusiasm.Back in July, KPC’s Philately Passport sale went viral when people lined up at these offices as early as 5.30 am. And this time, people practically did not sleep on Friday, October 9.Philately passport craze is realThis weekend’s sale saw crowds gathering at the gates in the wee hours of the day, from 2 am onwards, for a sale that was supposed to begin around 9–10 am. Several people posted online how they came around 4am, 5 am only to realise that the queue was already too long!According to a Deccan Herald report, one person, who was probably the first to get the passport on Saturday, arrived and claimed his spot at 10 pm on Friday night! You can imagine the craze, then.Last time, people brought their laptops and newspapers to keep them company. This time, people waited as long as five to eight hours. So, they brought their friends, UNO cards, Ludo, books, sketch book, and more. In one of the several videos circulating online, a group of people even brought a big speaker!Believe it or not, At one point, KPC even urged people on social media to stay home—the queue was already longer than the supply of tokens. Interestingly, looking at the response, the sale and token distribution also started much earlier on Sunday. In Bengaluru, they started their day at 7 am! So, maybe “viral” is an understatement here.In a way, this booklet gives you a reason to look beyond the usual headline attractions. While tracking down a cancellation, you might notice an old building, spend longer in a museum or strike up a conversation with a postal employee about the illustration you’ve come to collect. That makes for a good hidden gem discovery story!- Ends
