Austin Abrams has had a meteoric rise to stardom in recent years. The actor had supporting roles in a number of high profile television projects in the 2010s, including The Inbetweeners, The Walking Dead, and This is Us. Abrams was one of the leading actors of HBO’s Euphoria, which massively increased his standing in Hollywood as well. Abrams’ career has skyrocketed ever since he first debuted in Euphoria, and has since gone on to appear in a number of films, too. The Florida-born actor had a central role in Wolfs, which also starred Brad Pitt and George Clooney; Abrams, interestingly enough, outshone both of his A-list costars in the film, according to many critics. Abrams’ role as a bona fide movie star has finally come this fall, first with the release of Zack Cregger’s Resident Evil. Abrams played Brian, a humorous and likable hero navigating the beginnings of a zombie outbreak. Now, just one month on from that film, Austin Abrams's filmography has put him back in theaters with another project — Whalefall. Based upon a book of the same name, Whalefall follows Jay, a man in his early 20s who was raised by an incredibly demanding, and often abusive, father. After his dad goes missing in the ocean, Jay sets out to find his remains, but is quickly sidetracked when he’s swallowed by a giant whale. The survival thriller movie then focuses on Jay’s survival, as well as his grief over losing his father, and builds up to an emotional and thrilling conclusion that’s full of twists and turns. Jay And Mitt Gardiner’s Relationship, Explained Credit: MovieStillsDB As stated, Whalefall follows Jay Gardiner, a young man grieving from the loss of his father just one year ago. On the anniversary of his dad’s death, his remains still haven’t been found, which makes Jay, along with his siblings, very upset; that’s in spite of the fact that Jay had a complicated relationship with his father, whose name is Mitt (played by Josh Brolin). Through flashbacks consistently scattered throughout the film, the audience is slowly able to piece together the history of the Gardiner family. Early flashbacks show Jay as a young child being trained by his father, with the latter often resorting to aggression and anger during his coaching. This approach led to tension between Jay and Mitt. As Jay grew up, he wanted to go down his own path; he was still interested in diving and exploring the ocean, but he also tried to avoid going out with his father due to fear of what he may say or do. At the same time, Jay, as a teenager in many of the flashbacks, also had a growing social life, which clashed with Mitt’s expectations of his son. Complicating Jay and Mitt’s relationship is the latter’s ailing health. Some time before his death, Mitt was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, but refused treatment when offered. At one point, Jay hopes to convince his father to try experimental therapy, but Mitt is adamant that he won’t spend the end of his life being "poked and prodded" by doctors. That conversation ends up being the last between Jay and Mitt, as the former moved to Iowa for college. Iowa proved to be a telling choice to continue his education, as the state is completely landlocked, thousands of miles away from the closest ocean. Mitt’s Letter To Jay, Explained During his final weeks, Mitt is shown to be growing weaker and weaker. At one point, Jay’s sister tells him that their dad is only holding on so that he can talk to his son one more time. Jay is reluctant to engage, and ultimately refuses to visit his dad before he dies, instead opting to return to Iowa. Before he died, Mitt wrote each of his three children a letter. His two daughters opened and read them, but Jay refused to do so. Instead, he left the letter inside the box holding his diving equipment. Jay still opts not to read the letter, even after deciding to risk his own life to find his father’s remains. Eventually, after Jay’s near deadly encounter with the giant whale, he finally reads his father’s letter. The audience isn’t told what the letter says, but Jay is shown smiling after reading it. How Does Mitt Die? Mitt doesn’t die because of his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Instead, with death on the horizon as a result of his illness, Mitt opts to take his own life. He does so by going out into the middle of the ocean, tying weights to himself, and jumping into the water. Interestingly, this is one of the first scenes in Whalefall, kicking the story off right away. How Does Jay Get Swallowed By The Whale And What Does He Do To Try To Escape? Shortly after entering the ocean, Jay finds himself in a life-threatening situation. A giant whale ambushes him, and Jay is unable to get away, as much as he tries. Eventually, Jay is swallowed by the whale, and he passes out during this. Jay then wakes up somewhere inside the whale’s stomach, and thankfully still has his oxygen tank intact, which allows him to continue breathing while trapped. Jay refuses to accept his fate, however. Instead, he actively deploys a number of tactics to help escape from the whale’s insides. For example, Jay uses the light glowing from a jellyfish to illuminate a dark passageway within the whale’s stomach, thus allowing him to move forwards towards the animal’s throat and mouth. At other times, Jay gets more desperate. At one point, Abrams’ character becomes more upset after multiple attempts to escape fail. As a result, he begins stabling the whale’s stomach, which causes the animal to bleed, but isn’t enough to make it spit him out. How Does Jay Escape? Ultimately, Mitt is a core reason for Jay’s escape from the whale. In the third act, Austin Abrams' Jay begins to hallucinate, and hears his father’s voice coming from the whale itself. Mitt explains that the whale is being attacked by orcas, and that it then calls for help from other whales in the area. Eventually, the whale succumbs to its injuries, which symbolizes Jay’s father’s death. It’s at this moment that Jay realizes what he needs to do in order to escape — cause an explosion. Jay puts together oil found in the whale’s stomach, combined with batteries he brought and his oxygen tank, to create a blast that blows a giant hole in the animal’s stomach. Jay’s Ocean Rescue, Explained Throughout the film, the whale is shown to be circling the coast of California. At one point, Jay even sees a tourist boat observing the whale, as he sits in its mouth, hanging on to its tongue. Therefore, the whale’s positioning helps Jay to escape the ocean afterward, as a boat of experienced sailors find him and rescue him. Whalefall is in theaters now. Whalefall Release Date October 16, 2026 Runtime 98 minutes Director Brian Duffield
