West Virginia and Virginia Tech basketball contract details

West Virginia will play a three-game basketball series against Virginia Tech, and we examine the terms of the contests. The first game will be played this coming year in Morgantown, with the matchup set for Dec. 5 inside Hope Coliseum. The second contest will be played in 2027 in Blacksburg and the final matchup will be a neutral-site game in Charleston, West Virginia. The information was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act Request. For the three games, each of the teams will be designated as the home team in the game that they will host, while the Mountaineers will be the home team in 2028. For the first two matchups, the teams agreed that the mutual commitment of traveling to and playing the games on the other’s homecourt will be sufficient with no other financial guarantees. The two teams are expected to agree to a third party to prepare and put on the game in 2028. That third party will be responsible for marketing and promoting the game, providing and selling tickets and various other duties to ensure competition. For the third neutral site game, an equal 50/50 net revenue split will be allocated to each team. But there are options with what each team elects to do with that revenue. The teams may receive their allocated revenue by payment to a marketing fund designated by the institution for the promotion and branding of student-athletes or direct payments to the institution. The home team will assign the officials outside of the third neutral site contest, where it will be a blended crew. Outside of a catastrophe or disaster that would cancel the game, if either the 2026 or 2027 game isn’t played the canceling team must pay $100,000 for each game that is terminated.
