West Bengal's affordable housing scheme (representative image)For many families, buying a home is not simply about finding the right flat. The bigger challenge is often affordability. High land prices, construction costs and the upfront money needed to buy a property can put home ownership beyond the reach of many low- and middle-income households.West Bengal's Nijashree Housing Scheme is aimed at addressing this need by providing ownership-based housing for people in the Lower Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) categories.Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries can be allotted flats through a lottery system.
