Welfare check on a driver in North Olmsted results in alcohol-related charges

(John Benson/cleveland.com)John Benson/cleveland.comBy Bruce Geiselman, special to cleveland.comNORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- A resident of a Lorain Road condominium building called the police department at 1:20 a.m. on Sept. 1 to request a welfare check on the driver of a gray truck that was parked crooked over lines in the parking lot.The engine was running, and the driver was inside the vehicle, the caller said.When officers arrived, they discovered the vehicle was parked over lines and had run over construction barrels, with one barrel stuck under the passenger’s side rear tire, according to a police report.The male driver was passed out with his head lying against the steering wheel. In the center console, officers spotted an empty bottle of Corona beer with a lime in it. The bottle appeared wet inside as if it had recently been consumed, according to the report.Officers knocked on a window and woke the driver, who stared at the officers and, after several attempts, rolled down a window. The driver was incoherent and mumbling, according to the police report. His eyes were red and glossy, his speech was slurred, and the officer noted a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage.The man declined to perform field sobriety tests.
