'We wrote the policy' - Winston Peters denies copying campaign group's health policies

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters insists his party wrote its own health policy, which appears nearly identical to content on a campaign group's website.The group is called Make New Zealand Healthy, which is also the title of New Zealand First's policy.Peters said New Zealand First had been working with them for years, and was the only party that listened to them."We agreed substantially [with] a lot of their policies, but we spent a lot of time studying other countries' as well, and it's in our foundation principles, 33 years ago," he said."We wrote the policy."Peters said reporting suggesting New Zealand First had copied the group was "dumbo" and "stupid".Make New Zealand Healthy's website includes 12 "solutions" and 15 other suggestions.New Zealand First has a 15-point health plan, and 13 of them are very similar to Make New Zealand Healthy's solutions and suggestions.Make New Zealand Healthy's website said its overriding objective was to "end the epidemic of chronic disease"."New Zealand's growing burden of preventable chronic disease demands a fundamental shift from reactive healthcare to a proactive, prevention-first culture," it said.Among its listed goals for this year are to run a national advertising campaign, present policies to the public and "key political decision-makers", and shape the election agenda.RNZ has approached the organisation for comment.
