‘We learn off one another and we follow through’: weaving fishing nets with the Aunties

The initiative to revive traditional net-making on Widjabal Wia-bal Country in northern New South Wales is fostering cultural preservation and community bonding among Indigenous women. By learning and sharing ancient techniques, these "Aunties" are not only keeping their heritage alive but also passing on vital skills and knowledge to younger generations. This project highlights the importance of cultural practices in maintaining Indigenous identity and offers a powerful example of how traditional crafts can play a role in both community resilience and environmental stewardship.
