The media had been banging on about how to watch it and when it would be in your area. So at the point of its (supposed) occurrence at 7.13pm, I watched from the garden for nearly ten minutes, just to see a similar skyline to that which occurred at 5.15am – sunrise – and nowhere near the darkness predicted. Sale is in fact 119 miles from Carlisle. To put this into context, Bristol is approximately 118 miles from London. Of course, this is perfectly fine, if your definition of ‘in that area’ is something like ‘north of Watford’. It’s just that this grates somewhat when stories relating to named districts in London are embellished with additional tags, such as ‘south-east London’. I’m not sure if these are particularly important to anyone who lives outside London. There. That ‘bee in my bonnet’ has been released! In 1850, a distant relative was transported to Australia for ten years for burglary. When the boat arrived at Western Australia (now Fremantle) it was just swamp so the prisoners had to build the prison. It is now a World Heritage site, which I visited last year.
