Sign in to your ScreenRant account Warframe remains arguably the greatest success story in the history of the free-to-play genre, showing that a great game can remain popular for well over a decade by focusing on what players want. Very few other releases can claim to have a community as engaged, and it's iterating on their feedback that has given it that evergreen momentum that it has become known for. That success has also thrust developer Digital Extremes into the very upper echelons of the industry, and they have been working away on a new game that has looked fascinating from the outset. Titled Soulframe, it's a very different proposition from its sci-fi looter shooter cousin, and it's about to take a huge next step that will allow players to get involved en masse for the first time. Digital Extremes In case you are yet to be introduced to it, Soulframe is an upcoming free-to-play, open-world fantasy action RPG that really doesn't look like much else out there right now. Though it shares some DNA with Warframe, it leans heavily into fantasy, and the game has a slower pace that accommodates the combat focus of melee and magic. It's a really fascinating project, and one that has been bubbling away in the background for a while now, but the game is finally ready to open its doors to all comers. The game is still in Alpha, but developer Digital Extremes confirmed in their October 30 devstream that it will open its early Alpha playtest for Soulframe to PC players worldwide on Friday, November 6 with Soulframe Open Preludes. It essentially functions as a free Alpha playtest version of the game that will be available to download from the official game website for Windows PC. There is already a lot to do in the game, but features will continue to be added all the time, and it's a great way to get involved early and have your feedback influence how things play out in the future. In confirming the news, Creative Director Geoff Crookes shared the following insight into why now is the right time for the game to go global: "Soulframe has been a community-driven game from day one, shaped by the tight-knit group of players that joined us for Preludes, and now, we're ready to grow that community even further. It feels a little scary to finally open the gates like this, but the introduction of mounts and world progression systems is the right time so we can gather essential feedback on these features and everything we've worked on so far. The more players we have right now, the more helpful it is for our team to inform the direction Soulframe takes. Thank you to everyone who has helped get us this far." Digital Extremes Those early days of playing Warframe back in 2013 were pretty special, and being able to play consistently for all this time really makes players a part of a genuine community. Soulframe could end up being very similar in that sense, and you'll now have the chance to find out for yourself from November 6.
