Officers from the Istanbul Police Department’s Public Security Branch Directorate had been hunting Başar as part of a wider crackdown on fugitives with finalised prison sentences. He had been wanted over a 2010 offence in Samsun described by Turkish authorities as “theft by impersonating an official without authorisation.” The crime resulted in a finalised prison sentence, leaving Başar wanted by police for almost eight years. Authorities said their investigation revealed the fugitive had allegedly relied on his disguise and his sister’s identity to remain hidden from the law. But after years on the run, his elaborate attempt to disappear finally unravelled in Istanbul.
