Want to study engineering in Hindi? MP college offers BTech with Rs 2 lakh incentive

SGSITS Indore has introduced a Hindi-medium BTech in civil engineering from the 2026-27 session. The move aims to help Hindi-medium students study technical subjects more easily while still building essential English skills.For students, the move is expected to make it easier to understand complex engineering concepts without having to first overcome the language barrier (Image: pexels.com)A Hindi-medium BTech programme in civil engineering has been introduced at Shri G S Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), Indore, from the 2026-27 academic session. Students admitted to the programme will also be eligible for a Rs 2 lakh incentive from the Madhya Pradesh government during their final year, according to officials.The aided autonomous institute has reserved 30 seats for the Hindi-medium civil engineering batch, of which approximately 20 have already been filled.The programme has been launched as part of efforts aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), with the aim of making technical education more accessible to students who have completed their schooling in Hindi medium.Sunil Ajmera, head of the civil engineering department at SGSITS, said the institute had found that several students who studied in Hindi medium until Class 12 faced difficulties when they moved to engineering courses taught in English. In some cases, these challenges led students to discontinue their studies. According to PTI, Ajmera said: “Keeping this aspect in mind, the BTech civil engineering course has begun in Hindi so that students can study and appear for examinations in their mother tongue.”FOUR YEARS OF PREPARATION BEHIND HINDI-MEDIUM ENGINEERING COURSEThe institute had been working on the initiative for several years before formally introducing the programme this academic session. Vivek Tiwari, assistant professor in the civil engineering department, said faculty members and experts had spent the last four years converting English technical learning material into Hindi.The institute also conducted workshops to prepare teachers to deliver engineering lessons in Hindi, he added.For students, the move is expected to make it easier to understand complex engineering concepts without having to first overcome the language barrier."For me, studying civil engineering in English would have meant taking help from Google and ChatGPT to understand difficult subjects. But while studying in my mother tongue Hindi, teachers can explain even technical terms in English easily," engineering student Rohit Sharma told PTI.At the same time, the institute is not treating Hindi and English as mutually exclusive.
