Walkathon held to raise awareness on eye donation

RAGHUNATHAN Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital organised ‘Walk for Vision – 2026’ at St. Thomas Mount in Chennai on Tuesday to raise awareness about eye donation, marking National Eye Donation Day.The awareness rally was flagged off by actor and philanthropist Gautami T. Former Chief Information Commissioner of Tamil Nadu and former Director-General of Police, CB-CID, Shakeel Akhter, was the chief guest.Ms. Gautami said eye donation could transform lives and help create a safer environment for people with visual disabilities. Mr. Akhter said one corneal donation could help restore vision in two people. He stressed the need to create greater public awareness about eye donation and encourage people to pledge their eyes.T.S. Surendran, chairman, and R.R. Sudhir, head, Department of Preventive Ophthalmology and Deputy Director, Cornea Services, took part in the rally along with Sankara Nethralaya staff, students and eye-care professionals.
