Anyway, Volkswagen’s long-awaited electric supermini is finally here and it’s going to clean up. We like the way it looks. We like the way it drives. And we really like the name. This car was originally going to be called ID2 but thankfully a new gaffer came in and corrected it. I should spell out that today’s petrol Polo isn’t done and dusted. It will carry on beside the EV for a good few years yet. Right, electric Polo. Two battery sizes. One will do 200 miles, the other closer to 280. Three power outputs. The base car is 116hp, like a petrol Polo, and the fastest non-GTI packs 211hp. All versions are front-wheel drive, like a petrol Polo, and four metres in length, like a petrol Polo. So everything’s familiar. The big win is the cabin, it is F R E S and H. Lots of soft-touch materials, designer stitching on the doors, pause and play printed on the brake and accelerator pedals, customisable display screens and proper buttons for air con and volume. It’s amazing how many car firms have got that last bit wrong in recent years, VW included. Many of you will like the retro mode which displays Mk1 Golf dials in the driver’s binnacle and a cassette tape on the central touchscreen. But I was a bit disappointed with it. You click on the cassette tape to change a song and it reverts back to the modern display. So it’s only skin deep. Your friends in the back have a good amount of space. But unlike bigger VW models there’s no phone holder stitched into the headrests in front of you. That’s a fail. You will be pleased with the boot. No exhaust plumbing means it’s 25 per cent bigger than a petrol Polo — and even carries more stuff than a Golf. But you won’t be pleased with the boot release button. You should just press the VW badge, like a petrol Polo. But the badge is fixed and illuminated on this car. Grrrr. So you’ll get grubby fingers. Those little grumbles aside and we’re all good. Polo is a proper little VW for the electric age and there’s a GTI coming soon.
